The offense, though having its productive moments from time to time, was sluggish. The defense flashed signs of potential but ultimately couldn’t hold the Buffalo Bills offense long enough for their own offense to catch up. With that being said, there was a bright spot in the loss: wide receiver Jermaine Kearse.

Jermaine Kearse a Bright Spot in Ugly New York Jets Opener

Kearse’s Production

Kearse was acquired in a trade over a week ago. The Seattle Seahawks sent him and a second round pick to New York in exchange for defensive end Sheldon Richardson. At the height of his career, Kearse was a play away from being a Super Bowl hero. Recently, his career has been on the decline.

Being the only viable receiver on the Jets might help put his career back on track. The 27-year-old receiver was targeted eight times on Sunday, hauling in seven of the targets for 59 yards.

After the game, quarterback Josh McCown had nothing but praise for his newly acquired receive.

“I thought he was effective,” McCown said a quote to NewYorkJets.com. “I mean, how many balls did he catch? He had a ton of balls.”

Though his stats might not look like much to fans of other teams, that kind of production on the Jets is noteworthy. Especially since he was just acquired ten days ago and was thrown into the offense.

Kearse led the team in both receptions and yards through the air. It was an impressive showing for his Gang Green debut and hopefully, he can continue to develop his chemistry with McCown.

Amongst many other pivotal decisions head coach Todd Bowles will have to face in the upcoming weeks, picking a quarterback is at the top of the list. If Kearse continues to play well with McCown and the offense can move the ball, it will be difficult to put in one of the Jets younger quarterbacks.

For now, however, Jets fans can enjoy the fact that they might have actually won something: the trade with the Seahawks. A second round pick and a number one receiver for a distraction is a win.

Bottom Line

As for Kearse’s contract, he is signed through 2018. Kearse should continue to produce in the Big Apple for 31 more games.

Embed from Getty Images

The 2017 New York Jets are full of unproven players.
