On Wednesday the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.patriots.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Patriots<\/a> signed Slater to a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spotrac.com\/nfl\/new-england-patriots\/matthew-slater-4628\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">one-year contract<\/a>\u00a0extension worth $1.8 million, with $1.5 million guaranteed. First reported by <a href=\"http:\/\/espnmediazone.com\/us\/bios\/field-yates\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Field Yates<\/a> of ESPN, the news of Slater&#8217;s contract extension comes just 11 days before the Patriots open the regular season in Arizona against the Cardinals.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Source: the Patriots have signed WR\/ST Matthew Slater to a 1-year, $1.8M extension through 2017. He&#39;s a 5-time Pro Bowler.<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Field Yates (@FieldYates) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/FieldYates\/status\/770933365763694592?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">August 31, 2016<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h2>Matthew Slater Gets Contract Extension<\/h2>\n<p>The breakdown of Slater&#8217;s new deal looks like this:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>$900,000 in base salary<\/li>\n<li>A $600,000 signing bonus<\/li>\n<li>An additional roster bonus of $300,000 if he appears in all 16 games ($18,750\/game)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>On top of retaining their best special teams player, the new contract actually <em>lowers<\/em> New England&#8217;s cap hit\u00a0to $1.65 million. The Patriots had <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spotrac.com\/nfl\/new-england-patriots\/matthew-slater-4628\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">previously signed<\/a> Slater to a 2-year, $4 million dollar contract following the 2014 season.<\/p>\n<p>The 5-time Pro-Bowler turns 31 on September 9th and has been with the Patriots since being drafted in the 5th round (153rd overall) of the 2008 draft.
