Probably one of the wildest NFL rumors in the latest projection, the Kansas City Chiefs and Arizona Cardinals may agree to a midseason trade involving WR Michael Wilson. Despite ongoing negotiations going well in Arizona, SB Nation’s Jarrett Bailey predicted Kansas City may trade for Wilson. The former third-round pick of the 2023 NFL Draft is entering the final year of his rookie deal and is coming off a breakout season. He hauled in 8 catches for 1,006 yards and seven touchdowns while only starting 13 games.<\/p>\n
“After sweeping the Broncos, the Chiefs are 6-1 and looking to add another offensive weapon to put them over the top in the AFC. They send a fourth-round pick to the Cardinals in exchange for Wilson, who is coming off a 1,000-yard season in 2025,” Bailey said.<\/a><\/p>\n Okay, let’s ignore the record prediction and focus on the trade itself. Kansas City grabbing the Cardinals’ breakout weapon sounds realistic if he doesn’t sign a new deal before Week 1. Rashee Rice<\/a> is back, but there’s no hope in his form as he’s been not only inconsistent, but also injury-prone and can’t seem to stay out of trouble.<\/p>\n While Xavier Worthy is showing improvement, the same can’t be said about Rice. After spending almost 30 days in county jail, there’s no guarantee that he’ll get back to his old rookie self. The former SMU product still has an opportunity to change things around, but the Chiefs are “wary” of offering him a new deal after the 2026 season. He’s projected for free agency next year, but it’s not like he’ll receive much interest if he doesn’t prove that he’s worth a new contract.<\/p>\n Meanwhile, QB Patrick Mahomes<\/a> is also entering a pivotal season himself and probably this offense, too. Although he signed a blockbuster extension, don’t expect him to be the same mobile pocket passer. He’s coming off a season-ending injury, and even though he recovered quickly, the Chiefs must surround him with meaningful weapons. Worthy, Tyquan Thornton and Jalen Royals could only do so much, and bringing in Wilson would help streamline this unit in terms of speed.<\/p>\n With Week 1 just around the corner, the Arizona Cardinals have a few housekeeping items to get to. Not only do they need to extend their breakout WR, but they also have Jacoby Brissett<\/a>, Josh Sweat and maybe Budda Baker to worry about. Wilson has proven himself that he could be a WR1, and that even means outplaying Marvin Harrison Jr. However, the Cardinals will need to prove themselves that they want him long-term, so expect him to be trade bait if he remains unsigned to a new deal come Week 1.<\/p>\n Here are two other teams that could monitor the receiver if he’s without a new deal midseason and the Cardinals have a disastrous 2026 campaign.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n The Los Angeles Chargers are only going to get better each year if they’re willing to help themselves. The team heavily focused on the NFL Draft once again, selecting Brenen Thompson to build around QB Justin Herbert<\/a>. However, when you have a QB like Herbert, you must surround him with explosivity. Not sure if Thompson, KeAndre Lambert-Smith and Tre Harris can bring Herbert to the AFC Championship, but they’re lacking a decent playmaker.<\/p>\n Ladd McConkey is probably the lone weapon who has a ton of promise, while Quentin Johnston has his moments. Wilson could make this offense exciting, electrifying, and especially paired with McConkey.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Zay Flowers is in line for a new contract as he’s proven himself to be the staple of this pass offense. Unfortunately, Rashod Bateman<\/a> has failed to follow up despite having a promising 2024 campaign. The team drafted Ja’Kobi Lane<\/a> and has Devontez Walker, but don’t expect these playmakers to help elevate Lamar Jackson’s pass game until after another two seasons.
