If we can stay healthy, we have plenty of people to go do it. To be at full strength is key, especially in the NFC West this year.”

That sounds encouraging on the surface. It also exposes the uncomfortable reality hanging over San Francisco.

Health is not merely one item on the team’s preseason checklist. It could determine whether the 49ers contend for the NFC West title or spend another January wondering what could have been.

49ers Cannot Afford Another Injury-Riddled Season

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOByd4cILfI" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 4068px; aspect-ratio: 4068/2213;" ></smartframe-embed>

The 49ers won 13 games last season despite losing several foundational pieces. Nick Bosa suffered a knee injury in Week 3, while Fred Warner went down with an ankle injury three weeks later. Both defensive stars missed the remainder of the campaign.

San Francisco continued winning, but the damage eventually became impossible to hide. Seattle dismantled the 49ers 41-6 in the divisional round before going on to win Super Bowl LX.

Young believes last season proved San Francisco could remain competitive while shorthanded. It also showed why simply surviving is not enough in the NFC West.

“If everybody’s healthy, we’re right in the mix with everyone,” Young said. “Last year we were a tough out, and we were wounded.”

Calling the 49ers a tough out is fair. However, the standard in San Francisco is no longer earning praise for fighting through injuries. This roster was assembled to win a championship, and its window will not remain open forever.

That makes Young’s emphasis on health both reasonable and slightly terrifying.

Every NFL team needs injury luck. Few contenders rely on it quite as heavily as the 49ers, whose most important players include several veterans with plenty of mileage. San Francisco has enough high-end talent to beat anyone. It may not have enough depth to absorb another parade of major injuries.

NFC West Gives San Francisco Little Room for Error

Seattle enters the season as the defending champion, while Los Angeles added Myles Garrett to an already dangerous roster. Rumors surrounding a possible Aaron Donald comeback only make the Rams more intimidating.

The NFC West has turned into what Young described as an “arms race,” and San Francisco is no longer the obvious team setting the pace.

“We’re chasing a little bit, but that’s okay,” Young said. “We never minded that. We’ll stand for it.”

The 49ers should embrace being overlooked. Still, attitude will only carry them so far.

A healthy San Francisco team can challenge Seattle and Los Angeles. Quarterback Brock Purdy, running back Christian McCaffrey, Bosa and Warner give the 49ers a championship-caliber core. The problem is that the phrase “if everybody’s healthy” has become painfully familiar around this franchise.

Young did not issue some dramatic warning to the rest of the NFC West.
