The Los Angeles Rams’ rookie quarterback, Ty Simpson<\/a>, is soaking up as much information as possible and has shown steady improvement at training camp.<\/p>\n

Simpson\u2019s Development<\/h3>\n

\u201c[It\u2019s like] drinking from a fire hydrant,\u201d Simpson said during OTAs. “You’re expected [to do] a lot. The quarterback runs the show here, just how I like it. But it’s just making sure that you’re disciplined and you’re detail-oriented.”<\/p>\n

The former University of Alabama quarterback drew some media attention after being selected in the draft. When the Rams selected Simpson, head coach Sean McVay\u2019s reaction drew media attention, with some interpreting his reaction as a lack of enthusiasm for the pick. McVay quickly clarified that the perception was a misunderstanding<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Despite the media attention, Simpson remained thankful that the Rams selected him. Since draft day, Simpson has focused on learning, especially from starting quarterback Matthew Stafford<\/a>.<\/p>\n

“I mean, he’s the MVP for a reason,” Simpson said about Stafford<\/a>. “Everything he does, he’s so just aware of everything. Aware of how everything works and is so detailed. Being in the room with him is just such a blessing.<\/p>\n

Simpson said Stafford has shared his experience and his expertise with the younger quarterbacks on the roster.<\/p>\n

“[Stafford has] taken us all in,” Simpson said,<\/a>\u00a0“And I really appreciate it because he didn’t have to do that. And anything that I can ask him, and I can just take in, I’m willing to. So, like I said, I hope I’m not annoying him, but I really appreciate the big brother kind of role that he’s playing in my development.”<\/p>\n

Rams Quarterback Battle<\/h3>\n

Even though he was the 13th pick in the draft, Simpson will compete. He is currently third on the depth chart, but the backup position is still in question. While Stetson Bennet currently holds the backup position, McVay made it clear there will be a competition for the spot in training camp.<\/p>\n

Simpson hasn\u2019t seen many reps in OTAs thus far, but he is learning in the classroom and film room. He also hasn\u2019t seen much time as a starter since high school. Simpson played three years at Alabama and only started one season. The lack of experience is concerning, but he is working hard to be better every day.<\/p>\n

“Are they coachable? Are they willing to work? And you’ve seen that from Ty from Day 1,\u201d Rams offensive coordinator Nate Scheelhaase<\/a> said<\/a>. \u201cAppreciate the way that he goes about his business. He’s an early-morning-stay-long type of guy, which you’ve got to be at that position.”<\/p>\n

Simpson\u2019s Advantage<\/h3>\n

Simpson\u2019s journey is only beginning. He still needs time to learn and improve. Drafted to succeed Matthew Stafford, Simpson will get at least a year to learn the playbook behind Stafford.<\/p>\n

Sitting out a year will be great for Simpson. He will have a chance to learn behind a veteran quarterback, something Tom Brady has long advocated as beneficial for young quarterbacks.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve gone on record to say that I think it\u2019s best in my opinion for young quarterbacks, rookie quarterbacks to kind of watch a veteran do it,\u201d Brady said on The Herd.<\/a>\u00a0\u201cThere\u2019s so much that goes on, and quarterbacks need to process so much information so quickly.\u201d<\/p>\n

Simpson will get a real chance to succeed, especially when Stafford retires. The Rams are built to win and will have talent for years; it\u2019s up to Simpson to make it work.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
