After a week where the backups made their final case for being on the 2017 Steelers roster, the secondary was improved by the signing of cornerback <strong>Joe Haden, <\/strong>and the front office <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/2017\/08\/29\/vance-mcdonald-is-upgrade-steelers-needed\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">traded for tight end<\/a> <strong>Vance McDonald, <\/strong>the final roster will look vastly different than what was projected two weeks ago. The final Steelers 53-man roster projection for the 2017 campaign is set and loaded with surprise and talent.<\/p>\n<h2>Pittsburgh Steelers 53-man Roster Projection<\/h2>\n<h3><strong>Quarterbacks (3)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/R\/RoetBe00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Ben Roethlisberger<\/strong><\/a><strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/J\/JoneLa02.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Landry Jones<\/a><\/strong>, <strong>Josh Dobbs<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Roethlisberger will be at the controls of one of the best offenses in the NFL. If Roethlisberger can manage to stay healthy, the sky is the limit. Red zone efficiency needs to improve over last season if they want to be the best offenses in recent memory.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Running backs (3)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Le\u2019Veon Bell, James Conner, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/W\/WatsTe00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Terrell Watson<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Watson is the surprise addition to this group, beating out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/T\/TousFi00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Fitzgerald Toussaint<\/strong><\/a> and free agent signing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/D\/DaviKn00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Knile Davis<\/strong><\/a>. But the running back position is all about Bell. He\u2019ll get 350 touches this season if he plays all 16 games. He\u2019ll need to cash in on as many of those as possible to use them as leverage when it comes to negotiating a long-term deal with the Steelers brass.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Fullback (1)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=NixxRo01,NixxRo20&amp;search=Roosevelt+Nix&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Roosevelt Nix<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Arguing with him is hard especially when there\u2019s no competition. A converted defensive tackle, Nix is a sound blocker and contributor on special teams.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Wide Receivers (7)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=BrowAn04,BrowAn01&amp;search=Antonio+Brown&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Antonio Brown<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/B\/BryaMa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Martavis Bryant<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/C\/CoatSa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sammie Coates<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/R\/RogeEl00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Eli Rogers<\/a>, JuJu Smith-Schuster, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/H\/HeywDa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Darrius Heyward-Bey<\/a>, <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/H\/HuntJu00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Justin Hunter<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Seven wide receivers seems like a lot, but if Roethlisberger wants weapons, then that\u2019s what he\u2019ll receive. Keep in mind Heyward-Bey is a special teams ace, and Bryant is one failed drug test away from being kicked out of the NFL. That changes the narrative a little. The unit as a whole has played well, and Hunter played his way onto the roster with his 58-yard touchdown reception against the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/nfl-teams\/panthers\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Carolina Panthers<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Tight End (3)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=JameJe00,JameJe21&amp;search=Jesse+James&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jesse James<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/M\/McDoVa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vance McDonald<\/a>, <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/G\/GrimXa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Xavier Grimble<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/G\/GreeLa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Ladarius Green<\/strong><\/a> experiment sadly failed. There\u2019s a possibility that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=JohnDa05,JohnDa08&amp;search=David+Johnson&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>David Johnson<\/strong><\/a>, the best pure blocker of the group, stays on the roster as well. But last year the team opted to use back up tackle <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/H\/HubbCh00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chris Hubbard<\/a><\/strong> as a blocking tight end with great success. The acquisition of McDonald gives Roethlisberger another receiving option over the middle in the red zone. Grimble looks big and fast as a receiver, he needs to become an elite blocker to take his game to the next level.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Offensive Line (8)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/V\/VillAl00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alejandro Villanueva<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/F\/FostRa21.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ramon Foster<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/P\/PounMa20.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Maurkice Pouncey<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/D\/DeCaDa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">David DeCastro<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/G\/GilbMa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Marcus Gilbert<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/H\/HubbCh00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chris Hubbard<\/a>, Jerald Hawkins, <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/F\/FinnB.01.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>B.J. Finney<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The same starting five from last season raise the question of health. Can Pouncey play 16 games? Will Villanueva continue to progress? Will Gilbert finally get elected to a Pro Bowl? The same questions as last season, the same backups as well now that Hawkins is healthy. From right to left one of the best lines in the NFL, they are tasked with keeping Roethlisberger healthy.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Defensive Line (6)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/H\/HeywCa01.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cameron Heyward<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/T\/TuitSt00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Stephon Tuitt<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/H\/HargJa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Javon Hargrave<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/A\/AluaTy99.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tyson Alualu<\/a>, L.T. Walton, <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/M\/MaxeJo00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Johnny Maxey<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As the most proven unit on the defense, the line gets leader Heyward back from injury. This is a contract year for Tuitt who has looked good in the preseason. Hopefully Hargrave continues to progress from his rookie campaign. Alualu was a great depth acquisition during free agency, only adding depth to a strong unit.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Linebacker (9)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/D\/DuprAl00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bud Dupree<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/S\/ShazRy00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ryan Shazier<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=WillVi01,WillVi00&amp;search=Vince+Williams&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vince Williams<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/H\/HarrJa23.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">James Harrison<\/a>, T.J. Shazier, Dupree and Watt are all first round selections. But the linebackers have a lot of questions to answer. Can Shazier stay healthy? Can Dupree blossom into a star? How is the departure of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/T\/TimmLa99.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lawrence Timmons<\/a> going to affect the group? Is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=WillVi01,WillVi00&amp;search=Vince+Williams&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vince Williams<\/a>, a special teams standout, ready to step into Timmons\u2019 shoes? What is the rotation between Harrison and Watt going to look like? Are Matakevich, Fort and Chickillo ready to contribute on defense? Answers must surface quickly; when <strong>P<\/strong>ittsburgh Steelers linebackers are dominant, so is the defense.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Secondary (10)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/B\/BurnAr00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Artie Burns<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/H\/HadeJo99.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Joe Haden<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/C\/CockRo00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ross Cockrell<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=GayxWi99,GayxWi20&amp;search=William+Gay&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">William Gay<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/S\/SensCo00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Coty Sensabaugh<\/a> Cam Sutton, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/D\/DaviSe00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sean Davis<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/M\/MitcMi99.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mike Mitchell<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/D\/DangJo00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jordan Dangerfield<\/a>, <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/G\/GoldRo00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Robert Golden<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The achilles heel of the defense the last few seasons, the secondar is going to be an interesting group to watch. Burns looks like the number one corner and will start the season there. The signing of two-time pro bowler Haden gives the Steelers all kinds of options. If he can stay healthy, he can solidify the man coverage scheme the Steelers are looking to implement more this season. Cockrell lost his starting job because of the Haden signing but it doesn\u2019t make him necessarily expendable. Sensabaugh was a free-agent signing that has earned himself a roster spot throughout the preseason. Sutton, a rookie out of Tennessee, is struggling to stay on the field due to injury. But when healthy he\u2019s shown flashes of greatness.<\/p>\n<p>The foursome of Davis, Mitchell, Dangerfield and Golden round out the secondary. They were the active safeties last season, there\u2019s no reason to think that will change this year. Davis is someone to keep an eye on, he looks like a play-maker, and finished his rookie campaign playing well.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Special Teams (3)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/B\/BerrJo00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jordan Berry<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/B\/BoswCh00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chris Boswell<\/a>, Colin Holba<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Boswell has been the definition of consistent as a field goal kicker. He doesn\u2019t have the strongest leg, but is reliable inside of 45 yards when it comes to field goals. Berry\u2019s progression as a punter has also been notable. He has a strong leg and an underrated feel for pinning teams deep in their own territory. The rookie long-snapper Holba did have one high snap that caused Boswell to miss a point after attempt against the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/nfl-teams\/colts\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Indianapolis Colts<\/strong><\/a>.
