Entering the 2026 offseason, New York Jets general manager had two major needs to address to help the team improve. First, overhaul the defense to allow head coach Aaron Glenn the opportunity to generate more turnovers. In addition, the team needed to adapt its offense to help diversify its passing game. After finishing 2025 with a top-ten running game led by running back Breece Hall, if the New York Jets can have close to top-15 production, it’d make a major difference in the team’s outlook.

The team moved on from last year’s starter, Justin Fields, by acquiring two-time Pro Bowl quarterback Geno Smith. But Smith can only be as effective as his wide receivers. Fortunately for him, the unit is led by the dynamic Garrett Wilson. Not to mention the arrival of 30th overall pick Omar Cooper Jr. However, there’s another talented young Jets wide receiver who deserves more attention. Acquired from the Indianapolis Colts in the Sauce Gardner trade, the Jets acquired Adonai Mitchell as more than just a throw-in. The young Jets wide receiver is set for a big season if he can capitalize on the opportunity.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="17b65b9e7d04d0189d37abf8a57b170b" image-id="LBFWKOkunN1b" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 5000px; aspect-ratio: 5000/3333;" ></smartframe-embed>

Young Jets Wide Receiver Is Ready to Shine in 2026

My #Jets stock report (based on OTAs and minicamp):

📈QB Geno Smith, RB Braelon Allen, WR AD Mitchell, WR Omar Cooper, Jr., WR/KR Isaiah Williams, CB D'Angelo Ponds, ED Kingsley Enagbare

📉QB Bailey Zappe, QB Brady Cook, PK Cade York

Note: No OLM/DLM, as it is difficult to…

— Rich Cimini (@RichCimini) June 19, 2026

The New York Jets are optimistic that 2026 has better days ahead after last season. Last season, after having a league-worst passing game, the second fewest sacks in the league, and the only team without an interception in 92 years, it has to get better. Right? Well, general manager Darren Mougey has certainly given head coach Aaron Glenn the personnel to improve, even if it’s marginal.

The defense features eight new starters in an appealing combination of veterans Glenn was familiar with, paired alongside two top-50 draft pick rookies. With Glenn returning to play-calling duties on defense, it’s become a good opportunity for second overall pick David Bailey to develop as an edge rusher.

However, there’s more attention drawn to the improvements on offense. The biggest move may have been retaining star running back Breece Hall on a three-year contract extension; the return of veteran starter Geno Smith has the team eager for a better passing game. Despite leading the league in interceptions in Las Vegas, New York knows their 2013 second-round pick has become much improved since his initial tenure. With Garrett Wilson leading the wide receiver room, the regime hopes Smith can bounce back. Especially if this veteran keeps up the great work we’ve seen since OTAs.

Coach Glenn on AD Mitchell: "He's a very talented player. With playoff opportunities all but completely evaporated, the general manager knew he had to do something to salvage this season. So, he sold high on his star players. After winning their first game of the season, the Jets announced that star cornerback Ahmad “Sauce” Gardner was traded to the Indianapolis Colts in November.

Despite losing a young, All-Pro caliber cornerback, the return from Indianapolis was staggering. While attention was turned to the two first-round picks, the team got a player in return. They acquired the 2024 second-round pick, wide receiver Adonai Mitchell. The young wide receiver struggled to separate himself from the starters, Michael Pittman and Alec Pierce. However, the new young Jets wide receiver had a lot of potential as a former Texas Longhorn.

Nov 30, 2025; East Rutherford, New Jersey, USA; New York Jets wide receiver Adonai Mitchell (15) makes a touchdown catch against the Atlanta Falcons during the second half at MetLife Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Vincent Carchietta-Imagn Images

Through four starts, Mitchell finished his first eight games in New York with 301 yards on 24 catches and two touchdowns. The first of his career as well was a 52-yard catch from veteran quarterback Tyrod Taylor in the Jets narrow victory over the Atlanta Falcons. At 6’2, 210lbs with great speed, Mitchell has the potential to be a valued deep route threat.

However, for the young Jets wide receiver to realize that potential, he needed a quarterback who had the arm strength to take those shots. Unfortunately, the trio of Justin Fields, Tyrod Taylor, and Brady Cook couldn’t provide that at quarterback. To the disappointment of the team & fans alike, New York finished with the least amount of passing yards per game in 2025.

The veteran duo of Frank Reich and Geno Smith should benefit Adonai Mitchell

At only 23 years old, young Jets wide receiver Adonai Mitchell is still years away from reaching his prime. Despite a slow start to his career, he is still learning to realize his full potential. During OTAs, Mitchell has been stealing the show during practice for most of the spring. The team is confident in the Jets young wide receiver starting training camp as their WR2. Fortunately, he gets to work with an experienced offensive coordinator and veteran quarterback who should make his life easier.

During the offseason, the Jets moved on from first-year offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand. He was replaced by a more experienced offensive playcaller in former Colts head coach Frank Reich. Reich returns to the NFL for the first time since his termination as Carolina Panthers head coach in 2023, during his initial season away from Indianapolis. After becoming the last-minute head coach for the Stanford Cardinal in 2025, the team hopes Reich’s recent college road trip can help lead a return to form during his Indianapolis Colts head coach tenure.

Despite not directly overlapping in Indianapolis, Mitchell and Reich do share a connection through the Colts’ legendary wide receiver Reggie Wayne. Reich was an assistant coach in Indianapolis while Wayne was playing for six seasons. Eight years after retiring, Wayne served as Reich’s wide receivers coach during the head coach’s final season with the team in 2022. Despite Reich’s dismissal, Wayne is still on the Colts’ coaching staff, where he worked closely with Mitchell. Even after the trade, Wayne spoke glowingly about Mitchell’s potential and rooted for his long-term success.

Nov 8, 2025; Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA; North Carolina Tar Heels head coach Bill Belichick with Stanford Cardinal head coach Frank Reich after the game at Kenan Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Bob Donnan-Imagn Images

Smith gives the young Jets wide receiver his most accomplished quarterback yet

If the team wants Adonai Mitchell to live up to his potential, New York needs to find a better quarterback to lead the offense. The starting job has gone to a potential upgrade in 13-year veteran Geno Smith. Returning to the Jets for the first time in a decade, Smith has grown more as a read processor and developed into a well-rounded passer after his Seattle Seahawks tenure.

Jun 10, 2026; Florham Park, NY, USA; New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith (7) participates in a drill during minicamp at Atlantic Health Jets Training Center. Mandatory Credit: John Jones-Imagn Images

Within the last four seasons, Geno Smith has completed 68% of his passes on 2,097 pass attempts for over 15,000 yards with 90 touchdown passes against 52 interceptions. While his league-leading 17 interceptions are concerning, Smith also played with a non-existent running game after the Raiders failed to generate consistent running lanes for first-round pick running back Ashton Jeanty. Playing with a better run-blocking unit and a great receiver at running back in Breece Hall, Smith should have more success when executing in play action this season.

In addition, an optimistic viewpoint could be seen that after investing in youth in the receiving options, the young Jets wide receivers can allow Geno Smith not to force passes to Garrett Wilson. Adonai Mitchell was taken in the second round because team’s believe in his value as a deep threat on the outside. Between defensive backs focusing heavily on Wilson and adding Omar Cooper Jr in the slot, Mitchell’s speed can allow him some clean routes if he’s pressed in man coverage on the outside.

While backing up Russell Wilson, Smith saw firsthand how Seattle helped refine DK Metcalf’s game to turn him into an All-Pro wide receiver. While not a one-for-one comparison, Metcalf & Mitchell are both physically gifted speedsters who are 6’3″, 200+lb while having sub-4.35 40-yard times at the combine. There is also a similar comparison that’s hard to ignore.

This is not to say Adonai Mitchell will have a similar impact, but the chance for New York’s third-year receiver has better days ahead. In his first two seasons, DK Metcalf had a drop rate of 7% or more in his first two seasons in the league. Like Metcalf, despite having 50 fewer targets, Mitchell had a drop rate of 7.2% on 55 targets. But last year, while still having limited targets, he had a 3.4% on 58 targets in his three games in New York. If Adonai Mitchell can continue to limit the drops, it will be a major boost to both his and Smith’s production.

Main Photo: [Vincent Carchietta] – Imagn Images

Entering the 2026 season, Adonai Mitchell is ready for his potential to turn into production.
