However, one insider hinted that the organization may not be completely satisfied with a particular position group. Insider Mark Kaboly suggested Pittsburgh could add a wide receiver either before or during Steelers training camp.

Steelers Training Camp 2026: Insider Hints at Wide Receiver Addition

“(D.K.) Metcalf, (Michael) Pittman, (Germie) Bernard, and (Ben) Skowronek are locks,” Kaboly wrote on X for “The Pat McAfee Show.” “I believe that (Roman) Wilson is as close to being a lock to make the roster as well, and with (Kaden) Wetjen being a return specialist that the Steelers used second-day draft capital on because they had a tip that other teams were interested in him, it’s hard to imagine the Steelers would want to risk exposing him to other organizations. There is also a possibility that they will add a veteran receiver at some time during camp.”

Of course, the opportunity to sign a marquee receiver was about three months ago. That was when the organization decided to instead acquire veteran receiver Michael Pittman Jr. from the Indianapolis Colts.

It’s not a surprise that Pittsburgh would be considering such a move. The organization wants to go all-in for Aaron Rodgers’ final season in the NFL, and the Steelers believe they can win the Super Bowl.

The remaining group of veteran free agents is slim pickings for Pittsburgh, but here is the most realistic option for the Steelers, with just over $6 million in cap room.

Steelers Training Camp 2026: Keenan Allen

Keenan Allen had a respectable season last year in his return home to the Los Angeles Chargers, posting 777 yards on 81 receptions with four touchdowns. He averaged 9.6 yards per reception as a depth option for Justin Herbert, who is facing pressure to win in the playoffs, slotting in behind Ladd McConkey and Quentin Johnston.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOBnkoIXJnz" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 3413px; aspect-ratio: 3413/2276;" ></smartframe-embed>

It’s very common to see Allen line up between the hash marks and the numbers, meaning he primarily resides in the slot. As shown in his highlight tape here, he makes a living by running crosser routes over the middle of the field and sitting in pockets between defenders.

With Metcalf and Pittman primarily as outside receivers, Allen would thrive for the Steelers as the WR3. He’s exactly the type of player McCarthy would want to bring in before or during Steelers training camp, and he made just over $3 million last season.

Allen would give Rodgers exactly what he was hoping for last season when Pittsburgh brought in Marquez Valdes-Scantling and Adam Thielen. He doesn’t have to start for the Steelers, especially given that the Steelers love to utilize formations with multiple tight ends. However, he can still make an impact off the bench.

McCarthy’s West Coast offense loves to utilize the middle of the field, as he aims to use the pass game to open up the run. He’s on the record stating the Steelers will run the ball a lot, and the Rodgers-to-Allen connection can certainly help open up the ground game.

This is a big change in the NFL from several years ago; the run game was previously used to open up the passing game. However, the direction of the league has changed, and now teams are flipping the script. Pittsburgh is certainly no exception.

While Allen’s presence would limit reps for the rookie Bernard, it would be another player with multiple years of experience under his belt. In fact, Allen has been in the league longer than Metcalf and Pittman combined coming into this season. If you’re counting this season, they would be tied.

The Steelers should do whatever it takes to bring in Allen for the upcoming season.

Main Image Courtesy of Isaiah J.
