The Brendan Sorsby NFL Supplemental Draft application is now going ahead, ending his collegiate career following a massive betting scandal. What&#8217;s next in the process for Sorsby and interested NFL teams?<\/p>\n<h2>Brendan Sorsby NFL Supplemental Draft Decision<\/h2>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"max-width: px\"><smartframe-embed class=\"smartframe_wp_element\" customer-id=\"b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf\" image-id=\"WmOBL79ohBHF\" style=\"width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 2700px; aspect-ratio: 2700\/1800;\" ><\/smartframe-embed><\/p>\n<h3>Brendan Sorsby\u2019s Change of Direction<\/h3>\n<p>After Sorsby won an injunction to reverse the NCAA\u2019s decision to make him ineligible, the NCAA immediately appealed the ruling.\u00a0 There has also been widespread condemnation of the ruling.<\/p>\n<p>Hours before news of Sorsby\u2019s decision came out, the Big XII conference <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/story\/_\/id\/49072316\/big-12-files-suit-vs-texas-tech-texas-ag-brendan-sorsby\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">filed a lawsuit<\/a> to allow the conference to punish Sorsby.\u00a0 Given the uncertainty of a potential suspension beyond the first two games and a hard June 22 deadline by which to apply for the supplemental draft, Sorsby made his decision.\u00a0 The potential of not playing at all in 2026 was looming large and would have adversely affected his draft stock.<\/p>\n<p>Per a statement released on X, Texas Tech Board of Regents Chair Cody Campbell explained Sorsby\u2019s thought process. \u00a0\u201cBrendan and Texas Tech stand on very solid and legitimate legal ground, but he faces a June 22nd deadline to be eligible to enter the NFL\u2019s supplemental draft, and there is no practical way to resolve all the various pending legal disputes and ensure his eligibility prior to this date\u201d.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Statement regarding Brendan Sorsby.  <br \/>Long Live the Matadors! <a  href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/FxPd00uT9L\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pic.twitter.com\/FxPd00uT9L<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Cody Campbell (@CodyC64) <a  href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/CodyC64\/status\/2066691267300364591?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">June 16, 2026<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.x.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h3>Brendan Sorsby NFL Supplemental Draft Process<\/h3>\n<p>There is no fixed date in the NFL calendar for the supplemental draft.\u00a0 There hasn\u2019t been one since 2023, when two players were available but weren\u2019t selected.<\/p>\n<p>In essence, the supplemental draft is a blind auction.\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t follow the regular NFL draft order or process.<\/p>\n<p>NFL teams are split into three buckets based on their previous season\u2019s record:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>teams with six or fewer wins;<\/li>\n<li>the remaining non-playoff teams;<\/li>\n<li>the playoff teams.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Within each bucket, teams are then ordered randomly, not on their record.<\/p>\n<p>Teams are then asked to submit a bid on a player.\u00a0 That bid will be the round in which they want to take the player.\u00a0 The team submitting the earliest round bid will be awarded the player and lose that pick in the 2027 NFL draft.\u00a0 If two teams in the same bucket submit an identical round bid, the player will be awarded to the team that is higher in the order within that bucket.<\/p>\n<h3>What\u2019s Next for NFL Front Offices?<\/h3>\n<p>Had Sorsby played for Texas Tech in 2026, NFL front offices would have had until April 2027 to conduct background checks on the quarterback.\u00a0 With the supplemental draft to be conducted in early to mid-July, they will have three or four weeks to get to know Sorsby and investigate his background.<\/p>\n<p>Between now and the supplemental draft, Sorsby will have a pro day and, if time allows, private workouts with teams.\u00a0 There will also be interviews to be conducted as teams decide whether they are comfortable with the person and the risk associated with drafting a recovering gambling addict.<\/p>\n<p>Due to the serious nature of Sorsby\u2019s gambling addiction and the fact that the NFL would punish him swiftly and severely should he lapse, NFL owners themselves will need to sign off on bidding for Sorsby.<\/p>\n<p>The NFL team that selects Sorsby will need to put a support plan in place.\u00a0 Ideally, a strong locker room and mentor figure would benefit Sorsby.\u00a0 Pairing Sorsby with a veteran quarterback in the same way the Las Vegas Raiders signed Kirk Cousins to mentor Fernando Mendoza would make sense.<\/p>\n<p>Sorsby\u2019s gambling addiction is going to be the deciding factor on his stock more than his play on the field.\u00a0 It may drop his stock by one to two rounds, but it\u2019s not out of the realm of possibilities that he goes undrafted.<\/p>\n<h3>Brendan Sorsby\u2019s Tape<\/h3>\n<p>Sorsby has good size at 6\u20193\u201d 235 lbs, and he\u2019s a good runner, needing to be accounted for in that area of the game.<\/p>\n<p>Sorsby is at his best when he gets into a rhythm.\u00a0 He often uses fake zone-read runs, and with his quick release, he gets the ball to his receiver on short passes on time to allow yardage after the catch.\u00a0 He throws a catchable ball and can throw with different release points to find throwing windows.<\/p>\n<p>He does need to speed up his processing.\u00a0 The Cincinnati offense didn\u2019t ask him to be a processor in the same way NFL offenses will.\u00a0 He will need time to develop this area of his game.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Brendan Sorsby eyes this one too long &#8211; a little double clutch in there &#8211; and, again, more touched in with air.  DB over to get the pick. <a  href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/hashtag\/NFLDraft?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">#NFLDraft<\/a> <a  href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/8BeTLpCQTq\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pic.twitter.com\/8BeTLpCQTq<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Paul Emery (@UKDraftFan) <a  href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/UKDraftFan\/status\/2057533241289003174?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">May 21, 2026<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.x.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Sorsby doesn\u2019t have an elite arm.\u00a0 He doesn\u2019t show the ability to drive the ball on a rope down the field.\u00a0 NFL teams with a large vertical element to their passing game won\u2019t grade Sorsby as highly as teams that use mostly short to intermediate routes and concepts.<\/p>\n<h3>Brendan Sorsby NFL Supplemental Draft\u00a0Team Fits<\/h3>\n<p>Following a thin year at quarterback in the 2026 NFL Draft, there are still teams with a need at the position.\u00a0 However, Sorsby is not ready to be the answer at the position at this stage of his development.\u00a0\u00a0Therefore, his selection is more of an investment in the future than being a 2026 starter candidate.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/category\/nfl-teams\/eagles\/\" target=\"_self\">Philadelphia Eagles<\/a> are the strongest fit, but they invested a fifth-round pick in <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/category\/nfl-teams\/eagles\/\" target=\"_self\">Cole Payton<\/a> (North Dakota State) in April, which will likely take them out of contention.\u00a0 It is worth noting that Sorsby is more advanced as a passer than Payton.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/category\/nfl-teams\/49ers\/\" target=\"_self\">San Francisco 49ers<\/a> would be an interesting landing spot.\u00a0 Sorsby is not as quick of a processor as Brock Purdy was coming out of Iowa State, but they have similar skill sets.\u00a0 Sorsby would offer insurance should Purdy struggle with injuries or not take the next step in his development.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/category\/nfl-teams\/jets\/\" target=\"_self\">New York Jets<\/a> certainly need a quarterback, and Sorsby would be a solid fit in the offense with a veteran mentor in Geno Smith.\u00a0 Whether Sorsby the person is the right fit for the New York market is a factor that would need to be carefully considered.<\/p>\n<p>There are other West Coast offense teams, but they have more of a deep passing element in their offenses.\u00a0 An example is the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/category\/nfl-teams\/packers\/\" target=\"_self\">Green Bay Packers<\/a>.\u00a0 They like to throw deep passes to take advantage of Jordan Love\u2019s arm strength.\u00a0 Malik Willis was the backup last year, and he has a bigger arm than Sorsby.<\/p>\n<p>Main Image: <span>Nathan Giese\/Avalanche-Journal \/ USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Following a massive NCAA betting scandal, the Brendan Sorsby NFL Supplemental Draft move is official.
