This offseason, Indianapolis largely doubled down on its existing core while watching several notable contributors depart, helping drive its projected win total down from 8.5 to 7.5 games in recent months.

Yet, the Colts still boast elite talent at several key positions, giving them one of the league’s wider ranges of outcomes. They could emerge as a playoff contender — or find themselves below .500 if the injuries that led to last season’s free-fall linger.

Let’s take a look at three reasons for optimism — and three reasons for concern — as the Colts prepare for the 2026 campaign.

Colts at a Crossroads: Three Reasons for Optimism

1. Daniel Jones is recovering from his Achilles injury faster than expected

The biggest reason for hope is under center.

Quarterback Daniel Jones, who the Colts locked up with a two-year, $88 million deal this offseason, has progressed well ahead of schedule in his recovery from the torn Achilles tendon that ended his 2025 season. Jones has already shown that his arm, at least, is just fine during OTA and minicamp work and appears on track to be ready for training camp.

Before the Achilles injury, Jones was playing the best football of his career. He completed 68 percent of his passes, threw for more than 3,100 yards in just 13 starts, and helped guide the Colts to that remarkable start before the season unraveled.

If Jones can return at or near the level he displayed last year, Indianapolis’ offense has a chance to be significantly better than many projections suggest — especially if wide receiver Alec Pierce, the other key player locked up with a big offseason deal, stays on the upward trajectory that Indianapolis expects.

2. The Colts have elite talent at multiple positions

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOBGyVdLeRc" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 2673px; aspect-ratio: 2673/1782;" ></smartframe-embed>

Every contender needs game-changing stars, and Indianapolis has them.

Jonathan Taylor remains one of the NFL’s premier running backs and is capable of carrying an offense. Taylor was on nearly a 2,000-yard pace through Week 10 last year, and likely would have led the league in rushing (he still finished third) were it not for Jones’ injury leading to the team’s unraveling.

Meanwhile, the midseason acquisition of Sauce Gardner gives the Colts arguably the league’s top shutdown cornerback. Gardner’s presence changes how opponents attack through the air and allows defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo to be far more aggressive elsewhere.

Few teams can match Indianapolis’ combination of elite backfield production and top-tier corner play.

Throw in six-time All-Pro Quenton Nelson at left guard and second-year tight end Tyler Warren, who finished in the top five at his position as a rookie, then picture Jones and Pierce being healthy in 2026, and it’s not hard to see why the Colts are capable of stacking wins.

3. The schedule becomes friendlier after the opening stretch

The Colts’ first three games— vs. Ravens, at Chiefs, vs. Texans — could present significant challenges, making a slow start a realistic possibility.

The good news is that the schedule appears considerably more manageable afterward, a big change from last season. If Indianapolis can survive the opening gauntlet and get Jones fully settled back into the lineup, there should be opportunities to get things rolling during the middle portion of the season.

For a team that may need time to find its footing, the schedule’s structure could end up being a major advantage.

Colts at a Crossroads: Three Reasons for Concern

1. The offseason was mostly about keeping the band together

Continuity can be valuable. But when a team becomes the first this century to miss the playoffs after an 8-2 start, standing still can also be risky.

The Colts’ biggest offseason moves were re-signing Jones and Pierce — and neither may be back from injury by Week 1. While retaining both players was important, Indianapolis didn’t make headline-grabbing additions to address its biggest weaknesses.

There’s a fine line between believing in your core and failing to improve it.

2. How mobile will Daniel Jones actually be?

Jones’ recovery timeline is encouraging. However, recovering from an Achilles injury and returning to peak athleticism are not necessarily the same thing.

Much of Jones’ success last season and throughout his career came from mobility, his ability to extend plays, and the stress he placed on defenses outside the pocket. If he’s even slightly less explosive, it could impact the effectiveness of the entire offense.

Until Jones proves he can move the way he did before the injury, this concern isn’t going away.

3. Replacing Michael Pittman Jr. and Kwity Paye won’t be easy

The Colts lost two important contributors this offseason. Pittman was traded to the Steelers, ending a productive tenure in Indianapolis and removing one of the team’s most reliable pass-catchers.

Meanwhile, edge rusher Kwity Paye signed with the Raiders in free agency, leaving questions about the pass rush opposite Laiatu Latu. Indianapolis added depth pieces such as Arden Key and Micheal Clemons, but neither player offers the proven production Paye brought to the defense.

The Colts are betting that younger players can absorb those losses. That’s a gamble that could either pay off or become a major problem by midseason.

Colts at a Crossroads: Bottom Line

The Colts’ 2026 campaign cannot be predicted with much certainty.

If Daniel Jones returns to form, Jonathan Taylor remains Taylor-esque, and Sauce Gardner shuts down opponents’ top receiver and leads to an improved defense, Indianapolis has enough talent to challenge for a playoff spot.

But if Jones’ mobility is diminished and the departures of Kwity Paye and Michael Pittman Jr. prove too significant to overcome, the Colts could find themselves hovering around .500 or worse.

The range of outcomes is wide. That’s what makes Indianapolis a true wild card.

Main Image: Mykal McEldowney/IndyStar / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images

With the Indianapolis Colts at a crossroads entering the 2026 season, they’ve become one of the NFL’s toughest teams to predict.
