It is no secret that the San Francisco 49ers wide receiver is ready to move on to greener pastures. But the message he sent via his Instagram stories over the weekend seemed evident that one team is currently a front runner.

Aiyuk’s Message: Is He Bound for Washington?

During the series of videos he posted on Instagram, Aiyuk was seen wearing a Washington Commanders hat.

Wow: 49ers star WR Brandon Aiyuk purposely wore a Commanders hat in his latest IG story.

Aiyuk is only 28 and could still be one of the league's best wide receivers.

Daniels x McLaurin x Aiyuk would be LETHAL. pic.twitter.com/AuWhqi63iL

— Dov Kleiman (@NFL_DovKleiman) June 7, 2026

Aiyuk’s message was simple. The Washington Commanders have long been discussed as a potential landing spot for the star wide receiver. If he in fact does land there, he would be reunited with his former teammate and quarterback at Arizona State in Jayden Daniels. The addition of Aiyuk would be a nice compliment to current Commanders WR1 Terry McLaurin.

How does Jayden Daniels Feel About Aiyuk Playing in Washington?

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOBMutyMREC" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 5312px; aspect-ratio: 5312/3542;" ></smartframe-embed>

While Aiyuk’s message indicates that the Commanders would be his ideal choice, how does his former Arizona State teammate Daniels feel about him playing in Washington? When asked about how he felt about Aiyuk playing for the Commanders, Daniels had the following to say on the matter.

I asked Jayden Daniels about his friend Brandon Aiyuk’s football future:

"I don’t know, I don’t have a sense on it. That is my brother and we have a personal relationship. His football future, that’s out of my control” pic.twitter.com/ba6Nulunad

— Ben Standig (@BenStandig) May 27, 2026

Daniels is certainly giving the polished political answer to the reporter who approached him about Aiyuk playing in Washington. One would think that adding Aiyuk to the Commanders roster would only put them in a better position on offense, and possibly position them as one of the strongest receiving corps in the NFL.

Does San Francisco Want to Release or Trade Aiyuk?

While Aiyuk’s message showed that he has an obvious interest in playing for the Commanders, do the 49ers actually want to release or trade him? San Francisco general manager John Lynch has been pretty straight forward with how he felt about Aiyuk’s position with the team moving forward. As early as January, Lynch made it clear he felt that Aiyuk would not suit up in a 49ers uniform again.

“It’s safe to say he’s played his last snap with the Niners,” Lynch said as reported on NFL.com

Then, back in April, Lynch urged teams to give him a call to discuss trading Aiyuk.

“No new update right now,” the general manager said as he held up his cell phone. “We’re available. Give us a call.”

Aiyuk’s message may have sparked speculation about a reunion with Jayden Daniels in Washington, but the bigger story is that the 49ers do not appear interested in keeping him. When a general manager publicly says a player has likely taken his last snap for the franchise and openly invites trade calls, the writing is usually on the wall. The question is no longer whether Aiyuk wants a fresh start, but whether another team is willing to meet San Francisco’s asking price.

Aiyuk’s Message May Accelerate the Timeline

Aiyuk’s message quickly caught the attention of NFL fans, especially those in Washington, but it is not the first indication that a separation between the receiver and the 49ers could be on the horizon. One thing is for sure, sporting another team’s attire may accelerate the timeline of Aiyuk’s next move. One would think that 49ers brass cannot be happy with his recently posted vidoes.

For months, San Francisco has openly acknowledged the possibility of moving on, with Lynch making it clear that the organization is willing to listen to offers. While Aiyuk’s interest in a new destination may be evident, the next move ultimately rests with the 49ers and whether another team is willing to meet their price.

Also Read: Brandon Aiyuk is not the only wide receiver in the NFL making headlines.
