{"id":286745,"date":"2026-06-08T14:13:03","date_gmt":"2026-06-08T18:13:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/?p=286745"},"modified":"2026-06-08T14:13:03","modified_gmt":"2026-06-08T18:13:03","slug":"jamari-johnson-scouting-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/2026\/06\/08\/jamari-johnson-scouting-report\/","title":{"rendered":"Jamari Johnson Early Scouting Report"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Jamari Johnson (tight end, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/collegefootball\/tag\/oregon-ducks\/\" target=\"_self\">Oregon<\/a>) was overshadowed by <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/2026\/05\/29\/kenyon-sadiq-injury-update\/\" target=\"_self\">Kenyon Sadiq<\/a> in 2025.\u00a0 He has a big opportunity to step into the spotlight in 2026.\u00a0 How will the NFL view him as a prospect?<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"max-width: px\"><smartframe-embed class=\"smartframe_wp_element\" customer-id=\"b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf\" image-id=\"WmOBGdwCn2YE\" style=\"width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 4500px; aspect-ratio: 4500\/3000;\" ><\/smartframe-embed><\/p>\n<h3>Jamari Johnson Early Scouting Report<\/h3>\n<h3>Measureables<\/h3>\n<p>Height: 6\u20195\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Weight: 257 lbs<\/p>\n<h3>Statistics<\/h3>\n<p>2025: 32 receptions for 510 yards and three touchdowns.<\/p>\n<p>2024 (for Louisville): 13 receptions for 158 yards and one touchdown.<\/p>\n<h3>The Tape<\/h3>\n<p>Games Watched: at <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/collegefootball\/category\/bigten\/iowa-hawkeyes\/\" target=\"_self\">Iowa<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/collegefootball\/category\/big12\/texas-tech-red-raiders\/\" target=\"_self\">Texas Tech<\/a> (playoffs), and <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/collegefootball\/category\/bigten\/indiana-hoosiers\/\" target=\"_self\">Indiana<\/a> (playoffs).<\/p>\n<h3>Strengths<\/h3>\n<p>Johnson has experience lining up all across the formation.\u00a0 He was used most often as a \u201cH\u201d (H-Back), but also saw significant snaps as a \u201cY\u201d (inline tight end) and \u201cF\u201d\/\u201dU\u201d (move\/slot tight end).\u00a0 This gives him a varied skill set, and he played 600 snaps in 2025 despite the presence of Sadiq.<\/p>\n<p>Johnson is an excellent blocker.\u00a0 Oregon even asked him to pull and lead running plays, something he does well.\u00a0 He also has experience in pass protection, where he plays with a solid base and looks comfortable.\u00a0 His ability to slide inside against inside rushes makes him look like an offensive tackle.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Jamari Johnson &quot;H&quot; TE on the left of the formation.  He&#39;s athletic enough to pull across and get a nice block.<a  href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/hashtag\/NFLDraft?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">#NFLDraft<\/a> <a  href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/cXbiOlFit7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pic.twitter.com\/cXbiOlFit7<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Paul Emery (@UKDraftFan) <a  href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/UKDraftFan\/status\/2063615999769710727?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">June 7, 2026<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.x.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>On zone runs, Johnson works square effectively to set an edge, all the while keeping his hands on his man.\u00a0 He can also climb to the second level and engage effectively.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, Johnson is a naturally flexible athlete who is able to translate that to his game as a blocker.\u00a0 He plays with good knee bend and a solid base.\u00a0 Johnson also flashes the ability to move defenders.\u00a0 He has good size, with the frame to add a little weight if required.<\/p>\n<p>As a receiver, Johnson has naturally soft hands and has the ability to make the tough catch.<\/p>\n<p>Johnson is not as athletic or quick-twitch as Sadiq, so he\u2019s not a deep threat.\u00a0 However, he has enough speed to be more than just a short-range option for his offense.<\/p>\n<p>Johnson is an effective zone coverage beater.\u00a0 He is best against Cover-2 coverage, showing the ability to run the corner route in the soft spot of that coverage.\u00a0 He uses a change of pace, coming off the ball slowly and then accelerating.\u00a0 This allows him to make a catch before the safety can process he\u2019s a threat and respond to him.<\/p>\n<h3>Areas to Improve<\/h3>\n<p>As a blocker, it will help Johnson to get stronger.\u00a0 While there are flashes of him moving defenders, he could do so more consistently with added strength.<\/p>\n<p>Now and again, he will duck his head into contact as a blocker, which he should be able to eradicate from his game.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Every now and again Jamari Johnson will duck his head into contact as a blocker. Paul Emery (@UKDraftFan) <a  href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/UKDraftFan\/status\/2063618902152634384?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">June 7, 2026<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.x.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Johnson is a decent athlete, but he\u2019s not a great one.\u00a0 At times, he\u2019s the last person to get off the ball, so he\u2019s not a twitchy athlete.\u00a0 This lack of elite athletic ability shows up as a route runner, where separation isn\u2019t always there against man coverage, and as a runner after the catch.<\/p>\n<p>In 2025, Johnson\u2019s route tree was limited.\u00a0 Hopefully, he will be asked to do more with Sadiq now with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/category\/nfl-teams\/jets\/\" target=\"_self\">New York Jets<\/a>.\u00a0 Johnson is a linear route runner, and he needs to show more craft in his routes.\u00a0 He has limited experience; this should come with more playing time.<\/p>\n<h3>Jamari Johnson&#8217;s Key Tests in 2026<\/h3>\n<p>Johnson should be able to put up good numbers with a manageable 2026 schedule for the Ducks.\u00a0 The biggest early-season test comes in week four at <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/collegefootball\/category\/bigten\/usc-trojans\/\" target=\"_self\">Southern California<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Later in the season, the two games that stand out are at <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/collegefootball\/category\/bigten\/ohio-state-buckeyes\/\" target=\"_self\">Ohio State<\/a> in week 10, before hosting <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/collegefootball\/category\/bigten\/michigan-wolverines\/\" target=\"_self\">Michigan<\/a> the following week.<\/p>\n<p>NFL talent evaluators will hope for a playoff qualification to give Johnson and the Ducks further tests.<\/p>\n<p>The full schedule <a href=\"https:\/\/fbschedules.com\/2026-oregon-football-schedule\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">can be found here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Jamari Johnson Projection and Summary<\/h3>\n<p>On the back of a 31-catch breakout year, Darnell Washington recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.co.uk\/nfl\/story\/_\/id\/48961024\/sources-darnell-washington-steelers-reach-4-year-extension\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">signed a four-year, $42 contract extension<\/a> with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/category\/nfl-teams\/steelers\/\" target=\"_self\">Pittsburgh Steelers<\/a>.\u00a0 Washington is an excellent blocker, and this contract is the most recent example of increased value of tight ends who can block well.<\/p>\n<p>Johnson does need to develop more as a receiver, but with a little added strength, he projects as an excellent blocker in the NFL.<\/p>\n<p>He is unlikely to carry the same value as Sadiq (sixteenth overall selection), but with growth, he can still push to be a late first-round pick.<\/p>\n<p>Main Photo: [Chris Pietsch\/The Register-Guard] &#8211;
