Mayfield enters a pivotal season with Tampa Bay where is integral he performs at a high level if he wants to remain QB1 for the Bucs.

During an interview at his youth football camp in Florida today, Mayfield noted that contract extension talks are underway after coming in and helping to steady the franchise and turn it back into a winning organization. However, he also stressed that there is still work to be done to secure the deal. Mayfield’s contract will end after the 2026 season and he will become an unrestricted free agent in 2027.

Mayfield’s Contract Talks Have Not Been Productive Yet

“First and foremost, regardless, we’ve built roots here in Tampa,” Mayfield said . “We love the community, we love being here, they’ve embraced us, and we enjoy being here and obviously gonna raise kids here. But yeah, contract stuff, it’s happening, it’s starting, the talks and what not, but not anywhere close to what we were thinking.

The best decision Mayfield made after leaving the Cleveland Browns in 2022 was eventually signing with the Buccaneers. Despite having a brief stint with the Carolina Panthers and quick stop with the Los Angeles Rams, Mayfield has found stability and a home on Tampa Bay. That stability does not just point to his football career, but his family has planted roots and from the sound of it, it seems like he would like to remain in Tampa for the foreseeable future.

Although Mayfield’s contract expires after the 2026 season, ultimately how he performs this year will dictate if he receives the offer he wants next year.

Tampa Bay is the Long Term Plan

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOBkGcZLj1H" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 3144px; aspect-ratio: 3144/2096;" ></smartframe-embed>

Mayfield’s contract talks not being productive just yet do not necessarily mean anything. A solid 2026 season should warrant a good offer for the veteran quarterback, and hopefully keep him with the Buccaneers for the long haul. Mayfield continued to discuss what his long term plans are and imposed a deadline on when he would like to have the deal done.

“So, we’d love to be here long-term, and as of right now, it’s not exactly the case. But as of now, I’m under contract for 2026, and the guys in that locker room, the staff know that I’m still gonna be me. I’m still gonna do everything that I can to help this team win the Super Bowl. To me, that’s the priority. Everything else will take care of itself.

Obviously, yes, I would love to have a long-term deal, but they know my deadline is as soon as training camp starts, we’re not doing any contract stuff, it’s all ball. So, it’s not up to me when that gets done. So, hopefully before that. If not, we’re still gonna have a good year.”

Mayfield’s remarks would seem to confirm that there really is no actual dispute between the two parties, even with no long term deal coming. Instead of sounding upset, he has instead continuously expressed that he is focused on playing for the Buccaneers and winning football games. That is a refreshing stance and one that should put Buccaneers fans at ease knowing that Mayfield does not want to let a contract negotiation be a distraction for a potentially playoff caliber season.

His self imposed training camp deadline also proves he is confident that he is worth more, if he hasn’t reached a deal prior to the beginning of camp he is willing to play his way to a larger deal and attain more leverage in free agency after a productive year that keeps Tampa Bay in Super Bowl contention.

Mayfield’s Contract Discussions Could Result in Feast or Famine

The outcome of Mayfield’s contract discussions could ultimately come down to what happens on the field in 2026. If he continues to play at the level he has over the past two seasons, the Buccaneers may have little choice but to reward him with a lucrative long term extension. However, if Tampa Bay takes a step backward or Mayfield’s production declines, both sides could find themselves facing a much different conversation next offseason.

For now, Mayfield’s contract remains unresolved, but the stakes surrounding it could not be much higher.

Main Image: Nathan Ray Seebeck-Imagn Images

Baker Mayfield’s contract negotiations will be one of the most interesting storylines heading into the next offseason for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
