While many factors go into how a team performs in a given season, the biggest factor is the quarterback. Quarterbacks get the most attention of any position and are expected to lift the players around them.

Although all starters under center face some pressure, there are a few quarterbacks who have added pressure to perform in 2026. Having the most pressure doesn’t necessarily mean a player is in danger of losing their job. A quarterback can be firmly established as the starter, while also facing scrutiny to improve their play. Which quarterbacks face the most pressure entering 2026?

Quarterbacks Under the Most Pressure in 2026

C.J. Stroud

The Houston Texans have won a playoff game in each of the last three seasons. While they have been a winning organization since 2023, C.J. Stroud has become less of a reason for their success. Stroud burst onto the scene with a stellar rookie season, and he looked to be emerging as an elite quarterback. However, he has regressed over the past two seasons, culminating in a brutal performance in the 2025 playoffs. There aren’t any questions about Houston’s defense, but Stroud needs to return to his rookie form for the Texans to take the next step.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOBiRCIcLXC" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 3432px; aspect-ratio: 3432/2288;" ></smartframe-embed>

While Houston picked up his fifth-year option, it has yet to commit long-term to Stroud with a contract extension. His performance in 2026 will likely determine whether he gets a massive extension, making him one of the highest-paid quarterbacks in football. With the best defense in the NFL, Stroud needs to capitalize and prove he isn’t holding the Texans back. Although his job security is fairly safe for now, another underwhelming season may lead to Houston to ask tough questions.

Justin Herbert

Justin Herbert, who faces a lot of pressure to win the AFC West this season, is one of the most talented quarterbacks in the NFL, but his resume is far behind his physical traits. While Herbert is in no danger of losing his starting spot anytime soon, he has fallen short of expectations. The most notable criticism of Herbert is his playoff production. He is 0-3 in the playoffs with dismal numbers. The Los Angeles Chargers have the pieces to be a Super Bowl contender, but they will only go as far as Herbert takes them.

Joe Alt and Rashawn Slater are working their way back from injuries, giving Los Angeles arguably the best tackle duo in football. A healthy offensive line and Mike McDaniel at offensive coordinator means there are no excuses for Herbert in 2026.

There is no question that Herbert is a good quarterback; however, he needs to prove more to be considered among the league’s elite. The best way for him to silence critics is winning a playoff game, or at the very least playing well in the postseason. Herbert can also ease pressure by adding individual accolades, whether it be an MVP or an All-Pro selection. Few quarterbacks have his talent, which is why there aren’t many with this level of expectation placed on them.

Bryce Young

Bryce Young is fighting for a contract extension of his own. He has righted the ship and steadily improved over his first three seasons. Although Young has shown he’s not a bust, he hasn’t had that breakout season to warrant full confidence. Like Stroud, he had his fifth-year option picked up, but the Carolina Panthers haven’t committed to him with a long-term extension.

Carolina made a surprise playoff appearance after winning a weak NFC South in 2025. While last season can be considered a success, the Panthers will have a hard ceiling until Young develops into one of the better quarterbacks in the NFL. 2026 isn’t necessarily a make-or-break year for Young, but if he struggles, the Panthers may look to replace him in the 2027 NFL Draft.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOBxkCUGZm6" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 3909px; aspect-ratio: 3909/2607;" ></smartframe-embed>

Baker Mayfield

There aren’t many quarterbacks who have had as fascinating a career path as Netflix show star Baker Mayfield. The former first-overall pick was written off but resurrected his career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Mayfield was incredible in 2024, throwing for 4,500 yards and 41 touchdowns while completing 71.4% of his passes. He looked like a serious MVP candidate halfway through 2025, but his play steeply declined, leading to Tampa Bay imploding and missing the playoffs.

Mayfield is entering the final year of his contract, and his production in 2026 will go a long way in determining his future. His first two seasons in Tampa Bay justify a massive extension. If his late-season slide from 2025 carries into 2026, the Buccaneers will be more hesitant to commit to Mayfield. The NFC South is wide open, and Tampa Bay should reclaim control of the division. Mayfield tends to be at his best when doubted, and he can either get a top-end contract depending on how 2026 shakes out.

Jayden Daniels

Jayden Daniels took a turn for the worse last season, but he was one of the most dynamic quarterbacks in 2024. Daniels posted a historically great rookie year and leading the Washington Commanders to the NFC Championship. His talent cannot be denied, but injuries led to a dramatic sophomore slump. Daniels is in a similar position as Stroud entering last season, as both had a remarkable rookie campaign followed by an underwhelming second year.

With Daniels, there is serious concern regarding his durability. Before getting into what his production will be in 2026, staying healthy this season is critical for Washington’s playoff hopes.

While one down season isn’t enough to warrant long-term doubt, if Daniels deals with injuries again in 2026, the Commanders may be hesitant to give him a long-term extension. 2026 will also give a better idea of which season was the outlier: his dominant 2024 or his injury-riddled and mediocre 2025? Daniels can still enter elite conversations, but he needs to bounce back in year three.

Main Photo Courtesy of David Butler II – Imagn Images

The 2026 NFL season is three months away, and different teams having different levels of expectations.
