Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell opened his weekly media session by confirming the news of <\/span>Kendrick Law\u2019s<\/span><\/a> ACL tear. Acknowledging that he hated to begin with this, Campbell stated bluntly, \u201cI\u2019ll get this out of the way. On Tuesday, Kendrick Law tore his ACL out at practice on a non-contact drill. Hate it for him. He was doing a good job, but that \u2013 it’s part of it, and it’s a harsh reality, but he’ll get it out of the way early, have his whole career in front of him.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\r\n

The injury means Law will miss the entire 2026 season. How does his loss impact the Lions’ roster?<\/p>\r\n

How the 2026 Detroit Lions Are Impacted By Kendrick Law’s Devastating Injury<\/h2>\r\n

The heartbreaking news of Law’s season-ending injury is a devastating turn of events for the talented young rookie. He began his collegiate career at Alabama before transferring to Kentucky. Law appeared in 20 games (eight starts), recording 86 receptions for 883 yards with four touchdowns, and 16 rushes for 83 yards. In 2025, as the Wildcats’ leading receiver with 53 catches for 540 yards with three touchdowns, Law was also a force on special teams. As a kick return specialist, he recorded 30 returns for 710 yards, averaging 23.7 yards per return, and contributed 10 tackles.<\/p>\r\n

At the 2026 NFL Draft, Holmes made a surprise move, trading picks 181 and 213 to the Buffalo Bills<\/a> for pick 168 to select Law, a player he\u2019d had his eye on since 2024. At his post-draft press conference, Holmes excitedly described Law, “He\u2019s a dog, man. He\u2019s a football player.\u201d \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\r\n

Holmes’ first impression of Law was in 2024 at Alabama. Excited by the young athlete’s build and explosiveness, he began making inquiries, only to learn he was an underclassman. However, when Holmes saw him a year later, he quickly recalled him. “Oh, this is the kid that I saw a year ago at Alabama.\u2019 I was fired up about just what he did offensively. I had no idea about his special teams ability. That\u2019s what really elevated him even more, and not just a returner\u2026 but this guy can play gunner. He\u2019s a four-phase special teams player.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\r\n

Impact On Wide Receivers Room<\/h3>\r\n

The Lions’ wide receivers room is one of the premier talent groups in the NFL. According to All-Pro receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown,<\/a> he welcomes the level of competition at this year\u2019s training camp.<\/a> \u201cInternal competition is great. I feel like our receiver room is, I might be biased, but we have one of the best in the league\u2026 There\u2019s always another guy looking to replace me, the team is always looking to replace me, so I have that mindset going into the year\u2026.Dan (Campbell) is creating competition all around; it\u2019s great for the team.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\r\n

Besides St. Brown and Jameson Williams, the Lions have second-year talent Isaac TeSlaa, who finished an impressive rookie season<\/a> with 16 receptions for 239 yards with six touchdowns. Former Arizona Cardinals<\/a>‘ wide receiver Greg Dortch was acquired during the 2026 NFL free agency.<\/a> Playing primarily in a backup role, Dortch developed a strong working relationship with Lions’ OC Drew Petzing<\/a> over the past three seasons that produced 90 receptions for 828 yards and eight scores. In addition to Dortch, Lions veteran receiver Tom Kennedy is expected to make the roster this season.<\/a><\/p>\r\n

Additionally, there\u2019s plenty of competition for the RB5 spot on the team, including 2025 NFL Draft pick Dominic Lovett, returning reserves Jackson Meeks and Malik Cunningham, and newly signed NFL veteran Cedric Wilson Jr. In the wake of Law\u2019s injury this week, the Lions signed Delaware UDFA Kyre Duplessis<\/a> to their wide receiver room.\u00a0Duplessis projects as an intriguing under-the-radar utility player with a high ceiling. In 2025, he recorded 60 receptions for 824 yards with five touchdowns at Delaware, adding 19 yards on three carries, three punts for 73 yards with one touchdown, a touchdown, and two kick returns for 33 yards.<\/p>\r\n

The Biggest Impact of Kendrick Law\u2019s Injury<\/h3>\r\n

The biggest impact of Law\u2019s injury impacts Dave Fipp\u2019s plans for the special teams unit this season. As a gifted, versatile athlete who can return kicks and punts, play gunner and tackle, Law\u2019s prowess on special teams<\/a> made him an especially attractive candidate to take over Kalif Raymond\u2019s role<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n

Now, without Law on the Lions’ roster, Fipp will determine the next-man-up as Raymond’s replacement.<\/a> Last year, running back Jacob Saylors and wide receiver Kennedy handled kick return duties. Saylors returned 33 kicks for 897 yards, with an average of 27.2. Saylors posted the team’s longest return of 39 yards.<\/p>\r\n

A nine-year NFL veteran, Kennedy posted his best season with Detroit in 2025, taking on the role of kick returner. Returning 16 kickoffs for 447 yards with an average of 27.9, he also returned three punts for 50 yards.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n

Dortch also brings experience as a talented kick and punt returner. Last year, he returned 31 kickoffs for 811 yards, averaging 26.2 per return, and 16 punts for 185 yards. Another option at kick return might be Duplessis, who demonstrated some flash as a return specialist. The newly-signed UDFA is said to have solid instincts as a receiver who had impressive YAC stats and showed good body control and balance with the ball in his hands.<\/a><\/p>\r\n

However, as a four-phase special teams player, Law’s injury impact will be felt by his absence as a talented coverage and tackle specialist. One new player who could potentially replace Law’s ability to cover and tackle is Lions’ rookie Jimmy Rolder<\/a>. Named the “Special Teams Freshman of the Year” in 2022, Rolder had a breakout senior campaign at Michigan, recording 73 tackles, seven TFLs, 2.0 sacks, three PBUs, one interception, and one fumble recovery. \u2028\u2028Posting ten tackles, two TFLs, 1.0 sack, and a fumble recovery against rival Michigan State University, Rolder was named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n

While the Lions have several options to lessen the impact and fill the roster gap, it’s going to be one very long and disappointing offseason for Law as he counts the days until he can finally take the field in a Detroit Lions uniform. \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n
