When a player gets the opportunity to lead an organization to the Super Bowl, a player who also simultaneously plays below the level he should be praised at deserves much more credit.

There isn’t a more scrutinized position than the QB position in all professional sports, not only because he will receive all of the credit in the event a team plays great football, but also the inverse in January when things go wrong for a team. This is how better QBs become underrated, and all three guys below continue to give their teams a shot on Sundays.

Is Your Team Led By One of the NFL’s Three Most Underrated Quarterbacks?

The ability to be productive in spite of being under fire, whether that’s being placed in a compromised O-Line position, playing under bad coaching, in a very obvious problem situation, or in a January implosion, means that those guys are still making plays to win.

Underrated Quarterback #3- Caleb Williams, Chicago Bears

It almost feels wrong because what Caleb Williams accomplished during his second NFL season, leading the Chicago Bears to an NFC Championship game, does not translate to what most of the public recognizes he achieved. Williams’ 2025 stat line does not lie. He passed for nearly 4,000 yards (3,942) and 27 touchdowns to only 7 interceptions in a second NFL season while breaking the single-season passing yards record for the Chicago Bears, and he is a leader who guided his team to within one game of the Super Bowl.

It’s baffling that his second NFL season went unrecognized in terms of his achievements, aside from the perception of him being “overrated” during his rookie season and people claiming, with the benefit of hindsight, that he was not good enough. Quite clearly, Williams goes from overrated to undervalued.

Underrated QB #2- Baker Mayfield, Tampa Bay Buccaneers

No QB in the NFL has done a better job of remaking his image in a more effective manner than Baker Mayfield has. After a roller coaster tenure with the Cleveland Browns, Mayfield ended up with the Carolina Panthers, then with the Los Angeles Rams as a backup, before eventually landing in Tampa Bay as a placeholder. Mayfield is truly a testament to self-belief and perseverance. After two unimpressive seasons following his departure from Cleveland, it was easy to say that Mayfield was a bust. Instead, he continues to churn out solid play, including 3,693 yards and 26 passing touchdowns while being productive on the ground as well.

Given the fact that the league is brimming with superstar QBs that can draw public attention, the mention of Mayfield has seemed to escape the minds of both media and fans who view Baker as a critical part of the Bucs ability to perform on Sundays. Despite knowing he could be swapped out for better options in tight contests, he delivered what his team needed. Possibly the most underrated quarterback in the league.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOBqSyhfjBA" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 4246px; aspect-ratio: 4246/2831;" ></smartframe-embed>

Underrated QB #1- Dak Prescott, Dallas Cowboys

The biggest, and only criticism to most Dallas Cowboys fans regarding the career of Dak Prescott has been his playoff success and lack thereof, with an abysmal 2-5 playoff record as a starting QB. The most commonly talked about aspect of his career has become a testament to not seeing the whole story; he’s guided the Cowboys to five playoff berths under his command.

Prescott continued a very productive 2025 season, posting 4,552 passing yards, 30 TDs, and a passer rating of 99.5 to put himself near the top of almost every quarterback statistic category. All of this while the Dallas defense struggled immensely, landing in the bottom half of the league in scoring defense. He’s led his team to a playoff appearance four of the past five seasons, and a .680 win percentage ranks him third among all active starting QBs. If there was ever an underrated quarterback in the NFL, it would have to be Dak Prescott.

Football is a Team Game

Outside of playoff stats, the success of a quarterback as part of a football team has to be taken into account. With that said, performance in January must be weighed very heavily for any quarterback, while still recognizing that football has always and will forever be a team sport.

While the QB is certainly the team leader, his surrounding cast can be the difference maker of whether you reach the Super Bowl or not. All three of these underrated quarterbacks have faced the brunt of the criticisms; yet all three have found themselves giving productive years in 2025 and giving their respective teams a shot to win every Sunday.

Whether fans agree or not, each of these players has earned the label of underrated quarterback through his ability to consistently give his team a chance to win.

An underrated quarterback can truly be one of the most valuable possessions in the NFL.
