After initially not being disclosed, the numbers have finally been released. Campbell’s contract is a fair deal for both the player and the team. Brad Holmes has once again been able to keep a homegrown talent in Motown.

The Lions certainly turned some heads a few weeks ago when they decided not to exercise the fifth-year option on Campbell’s rookie contract. Campbell has established himself as one of the NFL’s top off-the-ball linebackers and was named First-Team All-Pro in 2025. Some even speculated that the Lions may look to trade Campbell, but that was obviously never really an option. Well, Lions’ fans can now all breathe a sigh of relief, as Detroit has secured the services of Camobell through the 2030 season.

Jack Campbell’s Contract Details Are A Huge Win For The Detroit Lions

Contract Details/Comparisons

Campbell, entering the final year of his rookie deal (without the option), now has the financial security every NFL player craves. Campbell’s extension is for four years and $81 million, with $51.5 million guaranteed.

That average annual value of $20.25 million places Campbell second in the league amongst off-the-ball LBs, trailing only Fred Warner. Warner signed a three-year, $63 million extension with the San Francisco 49ers, averaging $21 million per year. Not having to make him the highest-paid LB in the NFL is a big reason why Campbell’s contract details are a huge win for the Detroit Lions.

In terms of total money, Campbell’s $81 million is also the second highest for LBs. Only Baltimore’s Roquan Smith’s five-year, $100 million contract is larger. The $51.5 million guaranteed places third in the NFL, trailing only Smith and Warner.

Campbell’s Ascent

Campbell was taken by the Lions with the 18th overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. A pick that was widely criticized in the football world (along with the Lions’ selection of Jahmyr Gibbs), Campbell quickly proved his doubters wrong.

The former Iowa standout has seen his production increase in each of his first three seasons. Campbell notched 95 total tackles during his rookie year, a number that increased to 131 in 2024 and 176 last season. 2025 also saw Campbell register a career-high five sacks.

It was clear that the Lions had struck gold with Campbell.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOBDhmx4wWs" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 3223px; aspect-ratio: 3223/2149;" ></smartframe-embed>

Why Jack Campbell’s Contract Details Are A Huge Win For The Detroit Lions

While he is now one of the highest-paid linebackers in football, Campbell’s contract is clearly a huge win for the Detroit Lions. It is not often that a player of Campbell’s caliber does not totally reset the market for his position. That Detroit was able to ink Campbell to a contract with an AAV less than Warner’s is a huge win for the Detroit Lions.

What is perhaps the biggest reason Jack Campbell’s contract details are a huge win for the Detroit Lions is that it was signed more than three years after Smith’s contract, and is $19 million less in total value. Brad Holmes showed his chops as a GM and continued his pattern of rewarding his own players with big-money extensions.

What’s Next For The Lions?

With Campbell now in Detroit for another four years, the Lions can turn their attention to the other stars from their outstanding 2023 draft. Gibbs, whose fifth-year option has him signed through 2027, will surely be kept by the Lions on a mega-deal. Both second-round picks Sam LaPorta and Brian Branch have also become pillars of the team and are entering the final year of their deals. Holmes may have his work cut out for him if he wants to resign all four, with Branch’s Achilles tear potentially complicating a new contract.

However, Jack Campbell’s contract details are a huge win for the Detroit Lions. Being able to keep a terrific player like Campbell without overpaying is another notch in Holmes’ belt as GM.

Jack Campbell’s contract details are a huge win for the Detroit Lions.
