After his production dropped during the 2025 campaign, New England Patriots WR Demario Douglas’ future is officially in jeopardy before the upcoming season. The three-year veteran is predicted to be cut or traded<\/a> as he enters the final year of his rookie contract. Douglas, a former sixth-round pick, became one of the most promising slot receivers in 2023. During his rookie campaign, the wideout posted a best of 66 receptions for 621 receiving yards and three touchdowns over 17 games and seven starts.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately for him, he took a major step back last season when the team signed Stefon Diggs<\/a> and Mack Hollins. Between Diggs and Kayshon Boutte, QB Drake Maye exploded as a capable leader of this offense, but the team proved they could do well without Douglas. With that, it’s safe to say that his days are numbered. Despite releasing Diggs this offseason, the team signed Romeo Doubs<\/a> and is preparing to acquire AJ Brown on June 1.<\/p>\n

The Patriots will likely cut the wideout right before the 2026 regular season. There’s a logjam in the receiving unit, and with Boutte already on the trade block<\/a>, the team has no other choice but to release Douglas. However, the team could make Douglas also available for a trade. Will a team be interested in acquiring him for a late-round pick? Most likely not.<\/p>\n

Teams are going to favor Boutte, whom they believe is worth trading for. Behind Doubs and soon Brown will be Kyle Williams and Efton Chism. This means that with the former Liberty product, it doesn’t make sense to keep him hostage in New England. It wouldn’t cost the Patriots much, but here are three teams that could be waiting for the release to happen.<\/p>\n

Possible Fits<\/h2>\n

Los Angeles Chargers<\/h3>\n

The Chargers aren’t closing the door on bringing back Keenan Allen<\/a>, but they’d be better off adding a younger receiver looking for a fresh start. It has been a disappointing offseason for the team that only drafted Brenen Thompson<\/a>. While there are several free agent wide receivers available, the team hasn’t made a move to sign one of them. Ladd McConkey is the lone member of this receiving unit that’s reliable, but the same can’t be said about Quentin Johnston.<\/p>\n

QB Justin Herbert is a top 5 leader, but the team must stop treating him with low-stakes weapons. Douglas is still new, but he’s proven to lead at least in the slot as a capable wideout with reliable hands.<\/p>\n

Kansas City Chiefs<\/h3>\n

Meanwhile, with Rashee Rice<\/a> expected to have a slow start this 2026 season, the Kansas City Chiefs should add another receiver. QB Patrick Mahomes<\/a> is recovering from a season-ending injury last year, and the team can’t expect him to be the same anymore. Between Tyquan Thornton, Xavier Worthy, and a rotating younger Jalen Royals, the team has to do something to save this passing game.<\/p>\n

Douglas won’t be the entire fix of the Chiefs’ issues, but it’d at least give Mahomes another weapon to throw while he’s in the pocket.<\/p>\n

Indianapolis Colts<\/h3>\n

After being forced to trade Michael Pittman Jr<\/a>., the Colts should be in the market for a wideout. The team gave Alec Pierce<\/a> a blockbuster extension, but he’s recovering from surgery.
