The Detroit Lions\u2019 2026 schedule is horrendous. What a disgrace by the NFL. Over the last several seasons, the Detroit Lions have ascended to one of the league\u2019s marquee franchises. The Lions have been heavily featured on national TV and have consistently delivered high ratings.<\/a> Last season, Detroit played on both Thanksgiving and Christmas. While most teams were able to spend the holidays at home with their families, the Lions were not. As evidenced by Thursday\u2019s schedule release,<\/a> the NFL can\u2019t seem to resist any opportunity to screw over the Lions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Detroit Lions’ 2026 Schedule Is Horrendous<\/h2>\n

Lack Of Home Primetime Games<\/span><\/h2>\n

Once again, the Detroit Lions are a ratings machine.<\/a> Lions\u2019 fans, in particular, provide an electric atmosphere that pops on television. Ford Field has become one of the biggest home-field advantages in all of sports. When the Lions are on the road, their fans take over the opponent\u2019s stadium. Yet the NFL only gave Detroit one home primetime game in 2026. That game won\u2019t be until Week 16, when Detroit hosts the New York Giants on Monday Night Football.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

The Lions have four total primetime games in 2026. Detroit will christen the Buffalo Bills\u2019 new stadium in Week 2 on Thursday Night Football.<\/a> The Lions also travel to Carolina and Minnesota for Sunday Night Football in Weeks 4 and 15.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Detroit (and its fans) have earned the privilege to host multiple primetime games. The lack of 2026 home primetime games is a slap in the face of the Lions and their fans.<\/span><\/p>\n

Another Early Bye\/Three Games In 12 Days<\/span><\/h2>\n

The bye week is such an important variable for each NFL team. With an 18-week schedule, NFL players put their bodies through hell. The bye week provides a much-needed break and some extra time for injuries to heal. Most players hope to get their bye week right in the middle of the season.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Lions, as usual, have one of the earliest bye weeks. This season, Detroit gets a Week 6 bye, meaning the Lions will have to play 12 straight weeks to end the season. With a schedule backloaded with difficult games, having another early bye is a huge disadvantage. In fact, the Lions haven\u2019t had a bye in Week 10 or later since 2016.<\/span><\/p>\n

What makes this year\u2019s early bye so difficult to swallow is the Lions\u2019 game in Germany. Week 10 will have the Detroit Lions host the New England Patriots in Munich.<\/a> Traditionally, the NFL gives the teams that play international games their bye the week after playing overseas. Of course, the NFL has gone against its own precedent and is making the Lions play three games in 12 days. After playing the Patriots in Munich, the Lions return home to play Tampa Bay the following Sunday. Four days later, the Lions host their annual Thanksgiving game against the Chicago Bears.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

The Patriots, on the other hand, have their bye after the game in Munich. In fact, they won\u2019t play again until Sunday Night Football in Week 12. The Lions will have played three games before the Patriots play their second.<\/span><\/p>\n

All Divisional Road Games In The Final Month<\/span><\/h2>\n

Road games against division rivals are usually the most important and difficult of the season for each team. Hopefully, these games are spread out throughout the season. In 2026, the Lions have all three of their divisional road games in the final month.<\/span><\/p>\n

Every year, the Lions and their fans hope to get games at Chicago and at Green Bay<\/a><\/span> out of the way as early as possible. Having to travel to either during the winter is a major disadvantage for the Lions. The Lions end their 2026 with their final two games at the Bears in Week 17 and at Green Bay in the season finale. Unless the Lions have wrapped up the division by then, they will be at a huge disadvantage with the playoffs on the line.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Lions also travel to play the <\/span><\/span>Minnesota Vikings<\/a> \u00a0<\/span>in Week 15. Having all three divisional road games within the final month of the season puts extra pressure on Detroit to build a substantial lead in the NFL North heading into December. Not an easy ask for any team.<\/p>\n

Final Thoughts<\/span><\/h2>\n

The NFL certainly did not deal the Lions an easy hand. After enduring a brutally tough 2025 schedule, Detroit\u2019s schedule for this season looked much easier. Now that it has officially been released, the Lions\u2019 2026 schedule is horrendous. If the Lions want to return to the playoffs after missing the postseason last year, Detroit must get off to a fast start in 2026.<\/span><\/p>\n

For a team with a new offensive coordinator and a revamped offensive line, that is no easy task. The Lions will also be featuring several new starters on both sides of the ball, including a few rookies. Usually, it takes time for new starting lineups to gel and rookies to adjust to the NFL. With this schedule, the Lions do not have the luxury of being patient. They must win early and often. If the Lions can accomplish that, they have a great chance of reclaiming the NFL North throne.
