Allen’s risk-taking leads to a beautiful and baffling blend of incredibly high-level quarterback play, streetball-type abandon, and about three seconds worth of every Bills fan holding their breath. On one snap, he’s making an unbelievable across his body 40-yard moon ball over the middle. On the next snap, he is truck-sticking an all-pro linebacker while he acts like he forgot he is the franchise quarterback and not a guy desperately trying to make the roster as a gunner on special teams. Allen’s risk-taking is what has given the Buffalo Bills the success they have had in the past ten years.

It is that style that is a big part of what makes Allen so good at quarterback. It is also not something Buffalo will ever be able to coach entirely out of him because it goes hand-in-hand with what makes him one of the best and most dangerous quarterbacks in the NFL. But the hits will eventually take a toll. The league makes life harder than ever on defensive players against the quarterback, but Allen continues to play like it is that created player on Madden, only there is no “turn injuries off” in real life.

Buffalo Has Not Limited Allen’s Risk-Taking

The Bills have encouraged Allen’s risk-taking for years; they have needed him to be Superman. When the plays break down, Allen IS the offense. He extends drives, powers through defenders, evades the impossible, and puts up highlights that almost no other quarterback could dream of. Allen does all of this because it wins them games. It’s just at the expense of him getting beaten up over 17 weeks.

The frightening aspect for Buffalo is that Allen does not exactly have a track record of avoidance, even when a smart alternative is available. There are times when taking a six-yard slide makes so much sense, and he instead decides he would rather try to truck a safety for nine yards. It electrifies the stadium, and it probably gives his coaches a slight heart attack on Sunday afternoons.

The Bills are not trying to make Allen any less competitive; they are trying to ensure that their franchise quarterback is playing this level of football in five years. Because while hurdle after hurdle might look spectacular in October, Buffalo knows that one clumsy hit can derail everything just as quickly.

Buffalo cannot afford to let Allen play “Hero Ball”

Moving forward, Buffalo has to start thinking beyond just surviving the next Sunday afternoon. The Bills have built their identity around Allen’s risk-taking and fearless football, but there is a difference between fearless and reckless. The AFC is too loaded, and the Bills have invested far too much into Josh Allen to keep treating every regular-season game like it requires him to absorb 10 unnecessary hits.

Eventually, the conversation goes from “look how tough he is” to “why are they letting this keep happening?” Buffalo does not need Allen’s risk-taking to take a turn for the worse. There is no need for him to be trucking linebackers in November. They need him healthy and upright when January arrives, because that is ultimately how this era of Bills football will be judged.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOBNDmwYxjl" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 2293px; aspect-ratio: 2293/1291;" ></smartframe-embed>

Buffalo needs to protect their investment

There comes a point in time when Buffalo has to accept the fact that Allen’s risk-taking and dangerous brand of play is both the fuel and the danger for this franchise. His highlights speak volumes. The hurdles, the stiff arms into linebackers, the broken tackles that somehow end up being magic; it is all the reason the Bills Mafia loves Allen. But it is not the reason franchises spend years hoping and searching for an elite quarterback to eat a hit every Sunday for absolutely no reason. If Buffalo wants to maximize its Super Bowl window, Allen must first stay healthy.

Because one day Buffalo’s season is going to end not from a lack of talent, but from Allen’s risk-taking.
