Anyone who has played in team sports understands that view. You can spend all offseason talking about what other teams added, but eventually it comes down to how you execute, develop, and be consistent over 17 games.

At the same time, ignoring the rest of the division would be a mistake.

The NFC South feels deeper going into 2026 than it did a year ago. There’s a good chance the division winner will need double-digit wins this time around. Which means Carolina has to understand where each team improved and what could realistically become a problem during the season.

Falcons: The Biggest NFC South Threat Is Kevin Stefanski

The biggest thing Carolina has to worry about with Atlanta is Kevin Stefanski.

The Falcons hired the two-time Coach of the Year, and regardless of how things ended in Cleveland, Stefanski’s track record as an offensive coach speaks for itself. In my opinion, his Browns tenure ended prematurely. Reports out of Cleveland suggested players stopped believing in the direction of things, but even with that, Stefanski still became one of the hottest names during this coaching cycle.

That alone tells you how respected he still is around the league.

And now he steps into a situation with more offensive talent than he had in Cleveland.

Atlanta already had pieces in place, but adding Jahan Dotson alongside Drake London gives them another explosive option on the outside. Bijan Robinson also looks like he’s turning into one of the most dangerous offensive weapons in the NFC South. There’s speed, versatility, and real playmaking ability across the offense.

For Carolina, that matters because the Panthers’ secondary is still young. Last season, they survived partly by being opportunistic and creating turnovers(7th in the NFL). Against a structured offense with this kind of talent, those mistakes become harder to force.

Stefanski’s system should help Michael Penix Jr. a lot entering his third season. Their offense is expected to lean into heavier personnel, under-center looks, and play-action concepts that simplify reads and create rhythm for the quarterback. That fits Penix well.

So while Penix’s development is still important, I think it’s more a byproduct of the environment around him than Atlanta simply asking him to carry the offense himself.

The real question is how quickly everything comes together. If Stefanski gets the offense operating the way he wants early in the season, Atlanta becomes one of the toughest offenses in the division to deal with.

Saints: Tyler Shough Could Become an NFC South Threat

The biggest thing Carolina has to worry about with New Orleans is Tyler Shough.

The Saints might not jump out as a major threat at first glance, but that changes pretty quickly depending on how you view their quarterback situation. By the end of last season, Shough was getting in legitimate Offensive Rookie of the Year conversations. Part of that comes with playing quarterback, a position that naturally gets more attention during award season, but a lot of it was also because of how he played down the stretch.

New Orleans won four straight games before losing to Atlanta in the final week, and Shough looked more comfortable and confident as the season went on. He also beat Carolina twice during that stretch.

What makes it interesting is the context around it. The Saints dealt with injuries up front, inconsistency in the run game, and a receiver group that was constantly changing throughout the year. Even with that, the offense looked more settled once he took control of it.

Now he gets a full offseason as the unquestioned starter.

The Saints also clearly made an effort to build around him during the draft. They added three wide receivers and a tight end, including Jordyn Tyson at No. 8 overall, who many viewed as the most talented receiver in the class. Pairing Tyson with Chris Olave gives New Orleans a receiver duo that can stress a young secondary vertically and after the catch.

There’s also the experience factor with Shough. He’s older than most second-year quarterbacks, and you can see it in how he operates. From everything coming out of New Orleans, he’s already earned trust inside the locker room and stepped naturally into a leadership role. If he takes another step, the Saints’ offense gets a lot harder to defend

And honestly, that’s why I view him as the biggest threat in the division. By the end of the season, there’s a real chance Tyler Shough could be the best quarterback in the NFC South.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="a61405551f80e72f675225f083759bb9" image-id="fwuQeuAqYUqu" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 2610px; aspect-ratio: 2610/1740;" ></smartframe-embed>

Buccaneers: Tampa Bay’s Front Seven Remains an NFC South Threat

You could easily point to Baker Mayfield and all of Tampa Bay’s offensive weapons as the biggest concern. Emeka Egbuka, Jalen McMillan, Cade Otton, and the rest of that group are going to put pressure on defenses. But for Carolina, the toughest matchup with Tampa Bay still starts in the front seven.

That’s where Tampa Bay’s identity starts.

Todd Bowles has consistently shown he can build aggressive defenses around his box players and generate pressure from multiple spots. Even with Lavonte David retiring, the core philosophy of that defense is still the same. They want to control the line of scrimmage, force offenses into uncomfortable situations, and make quarterbacks speed things up.

Vita Vea remains one of the most dominant interior defenders in football. His impact goes beyond stats because he changes how offenses have to block every snap. Run schemes tighten up, pass pockets collapse faster, and everything becomes harder to operate cleanly.

Then there’s the addition of Reuben Bain, whom I personally viewed very highly coming out of the draft despite the concerns about arm length. The explosiveness and power on tape are real. If his draft night hat grab gave any indication of how he plays, then that gives Tampa another disruptive edge presence in a defense that already knows how to create pressure.

The Buccaneers also added former Panthers defenders Christian Rozeboom and A’Shawn Robinson, bringing both experience and familiarity with Carolina’s personnel.

For the Panthers, the matchup becomes even more interesting because the offensive line is still developing chemistry. Monroe Freeling, Sam Hecht, and Rasheed Walker are all new additions trying to settle into their roles together. Talent is there, but offensive lines usually take time before everything starts operating smoothly.

For me, that’s the part of this matchup that matters most.

If the Buccaneers are winning early at the line of scrimmage, it can disrupt everything Carolina wants to do offensively before plays even have a chance to develop. And with how aggressive Bowles likes to be defensively, that’s not a matchup you want to face while still trying to figure yourself out up front.

Last Word on Division Fears

Do not worry, I still believe in this Panthers team. None of these teams is perfect, and Carolina still has a real chance to repeat as division champions. But the NFC South feels much more competitive going into the 2026 season than it did a year ago.

Atlanta now has an experienced offensive coach paired with a talented roster. New Orleans might have finally found stability at quarterback with Tyler Shough. Tampa Bay still has a defensive front capable of controlling games on its own.

And for Carolina, that’s the challenge. They need development from Bryce Young, consistency up front as the offensive line builds chemistry, and a young defense that can hold up against better quarterback play across the division.

The biggest NFC South threats to the Carolina Panthers in 2026 are very different from last year.

[29,27,30,28,6431
33533,33991,4548,34068,34843,34235,224,9819
post-282374","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-buccaneers","category-falcons","category-panthers","category-saints","category-nfl-teams","tag-2026-nfl-draft","tag-jordyn-tyson","tag-kevin-stefanski","tag-monroe-freeling","tag-reuben-bain","tag-sam-hecht","tag-todd-bowles","tag-tyler-shough
["GET
