This article contains a position-by-position breakdown of the\u00a0<strong>NFC East<\/strong>\u00a0defenses. The breakdown will contain \u201cthe best\u201d at each unit followed by \u201cthe rest\u201d in descending order.<\/p>\n<h2>2017 NFC East Breakdown by Position: The Defense<\/h2>\n<h3>Defensive Line<\/h3>\n<p><strong>The Best:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/nfl-teams\/eagles\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Philadelphia Eagles<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Rest:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/nfl-teams\/giants\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New York Giants<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/nfl-teams\/cowboys\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dallas Cowboys<\/a><\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/nfl-teams\/redskins\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Washington Redskins<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Eagles boast arguably the best two lineman in the division in\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/C\/CoxxFl00.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fletcher Cox<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/G\/GrahBr99.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brandon Graham<\/a><\/strong>. While their numbers do not &#8220;wow&#8221; anybody, their skill lies in the tape, which shows you the countless amount of times the two are causing havoc while being double-teamed on almost every snap. With the newest additions of\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/J\/JernTi00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Timmy Jernigan<\/a><\/strong> and first-round pick\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/B\/BarnDe01.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Derek Barnett<\/strong><\/a>, this is easily the best group in the division.<\/p>\n<p>While the Giants may not hold the top spot for this unit, they easily have the best nickname of any lineman in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/H\/HarrDa03.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Damon &#8220;Snacks&#8221; Harrison<\/strong><\/a>. Jokes aside, this is still a very complete unit\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/V\/VernOl00.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Olivier Vernon<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/P\/PierJa99.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jason Pierre-Paul<\/a><\/strong> on the edges. If this unit acquired some more depth, they would be in the conversation with the Eagles.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/L\/LawrDe00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Demarcus Lawrence<\/a><\/strong> and\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/C\/CrawTy00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tyrone Crawford<\/a><\/strong> anchor the Dallas line but, outside of those two, it is tough to figure out how successful this unit will be.\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/T\/ThorCe00.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cedric Thornton<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>is better suited as 3-4 end then a 4-3 tackle and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/C\/CollMa00.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u00a0<\/a><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/C\/CollMa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Maliek Collins<\/a><\/strong> has only been in the league one season (a good rookie season, at that).<\/p>\n<p>It is a little unfair to put the Redskins here, as they are the only team in the division that runs a 3-4. I say this because most of their pressure comes from their outside linebackers as opposed to their line. However, the team spent their first-round selection on Alabama standout\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/A\/AlleJo01.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Jonathan Allen<\/strong><\/a> and hope he can become the anchor they need.<\/p>\n<h3>Linebacker<\/h3>\n<p><strong>The Best<\/strong>: Washington Redskins<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Rest:<\/strong> Philadelphia Eagles, Dallas Cowboys, New York Giants<\/p>\n<p>It was mentioned in the last unit rankings that it was unfair to evaluate the Redskins because their linebackers are the primary rushers for the team. Well, this group of linebackers make up the best unit in the division.\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/K\/KerrRy00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ryan Kerrigan<\/a><\/strong> and\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/S\/SmitPr00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Preston Smith<\/a><\/strong> are two seasoned vets who know how to get after the quarterback. In the middle is\u00a0a deadly combo of\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/F\/FostMa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mason Foster<\/a><\/strong> and\u00a0newly-acquired free agent\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/B\/BrowZa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Zach Brown<\/a><\/strong>. This unit is poised to make noise in 2017.<\/p>\n<p>Assuming everyone is healthy (which is a massive question mark for this unit), the Eagles take the second spot. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/H\/HickJo00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jordan Hicks<\/a><\/strong> was able to stay healthy last season and showed he is a budding star in the league when he is in coverage.\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/B\/BradNi00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nigel Bradham<\/a><\/strong> was a sneaky good signing for the Eagles last season as well.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/L\/LeexSe99.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sean Lee<\/a><\/strong> is arguably the best overall linebacker in the division, but the Cowboys lack depth outside of their veteran. They will be seeking production out of their young starters of\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/W\/WilsDa02.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Damien Wilson<\/a><\/strong> and\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/H\/HitcAn00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Anthony Hitchens<\/a><\/strong>. This unit has a lot to prove.<\/p>\n<p>The Giants are in a similar situation as the Cowboys; they have one seasoned veteran in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/C\/CasiJo99.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jonathan Casillas<\/a> <\/strong>with two young guys next to him. Many have touted\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/K\/KennDe00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Devon Kennard<\/a><\/strong> early on in his career, but the inexperience of this group has them in the last spot.<\/p>\n<h3>Cornerback<\/h3>\n<p><strong>The Best:<\/strong> New York Giants<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Rest:<\/strong> Washington Redskins, Philadelphia Eagles, Dallas Cowboys<\/p>\n<p>The Giants went out and spent big money last season to acquire\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/J\/JenkJa03.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Janoris Jenkins<\/a><\/strong>, and the payoff has been in favor of the team. In addition, the team also spent a first-round pick on\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/A\/ApplEl00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Eli Apple<\/a><\/strong> to couple him with their prized free agent. They also have another veteran presence in the slot with\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/R\/RodgDo99.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie<\/a><\/strong>. With a blend of veteran leadership and young talent, along with their success as a whole in 2016, the Giants easily take the top spot in the division.<\/p>\n<p>In a crazy turn of events,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/N\/NormJo01.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u00a0<\/a><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=NormJo01,NormJo00&amp;search=Josh+Norman&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Josh Norman<\/a><\/strong> left the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/nfl-teams\/panthers\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Carolina Panthers<\/strong><\/a> and inked his spot with the Redskins. Norman is a top ten talent at the position and is as consistent as they come. Washington also received good play from the young <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/B\/BreeBa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bashaud Breeland<\/a><\/strong>. Norman alone makes this unit the second-best in the division and anything else they can get from their young players is gravy.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/D\/DarbRo00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ronald Darby<\/a><\/strong> is the newest addition to the Eagles after their trade with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/nfl-teams\/bills\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Buffalo Bills<\/strong><\/a>.\u00a0Darby has plenty of tools to be a solid starter but is is yet to be seen if he can be a lock-down corner the Eagles badly need.\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/M\/MillJa02.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jalen Mills<\/a><\/strong> will start opposite of Darby, but he is far from proven. There are many question marks surrounding the unit heading into week one.<\/p>\n<p>The preseason was not kind to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/S\/ScanOr99.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Orlando Scandrick<\/a><\/strong>, as the veteran sustained an injury this past week. Combined with the lackluster play from <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/C\/CarrNo00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nolan Carroll<\/a><\/strong> last season, this unit has a lot to prove before the regular season starts.<\/p>\n<h3>Safety<\/h3>\n<p><strong>The Best:<\/strong> New York Giants<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Rest:<\/strong> Philadelphia Eagles, Washington Redskins, Dallas Cowboys<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/C\/CollLa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Landon Collins<\/a><\/strong> was in the mix for the defensive player of the year, a very rare conversation for a safety to be in. Collins was lights out last season, and he will only get better. His blend of ball-hawking skills and tackling ability make him a top three safety in the game. Opposite of him is\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/T\/ThomDa05.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Darian Thompson<\/a><\/strong>, a second-year player who has only played two games for the Giants. Simply put, Collins is too dominant to not put them in the top spot.<\/p>\n<p>Last season, the Eagles gave a hefty contract to hard-hitting safety\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/M\/McLeRo00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rodney McLeod<\/a><\/strong> to pair with Pro Bowler<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/J\/JenkMa99.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u00a0<\/a><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/J\/JenkMa99.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Malcolm Jenkins<\/a><\/strong>. The two showed flashes of fantastic chemistry last season but were not as consistent as Eagles fans might have hoped for. Individually, the two are very talented. They need to take the next step to usurp the Giants for this position, however.<\/p>\n<p>The Redskins have two thumpers patrolling their secondary in\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/S\/SweaDJ00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">D.J. Swearinger<\/a><\/strong> and\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/C\/CravSu00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Su&#8217;a Cravens<\/a><\/strong>.
