The 91st annual NFL draft will take place in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. For the first time in 2026, teams will have eight minutes to make their first-round selections. Previously, they had 10. On the clock with two first-round draft picks on Thursday are the New York Giants.

This past weekend, the team traded Dexter Lawrence to the Cincinnati Bengals for the 10th overall pick. New York also owns pick #5. With the Giants recently adding another valuable pick, league insiders predict the team could make a trade. Next, we’ll look at two draft-day trade scenarios that would add picks for the Giants in 2026.

The Giants are in a position to trade back if the board falls their way

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOBh3c4Cpiy" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 4434px; aspect-ratio: 4434/3641;" ></smartframe-embed>

Giants trade pick #5 to the Saints for pick #8 and #42

Ahead of the 2026 NFL draft, the Giants are in an envious posistion. Six teams own two first-round picks on Thursday. However, Big Blue is the only team with two selections in the top ten. New York might be able to move back in the draft if the board falls in its favor. Recently, beat reporter Art Stapleton shared a trade scenario for the team on Thursday evening. He believes the Giants could trade pick #5 to the Saints in exchange for pick #8 and pick #42.

In this trade, New York would then have picks #8 and #10 in the first round. Additionally, they would have two picks in the second round, #37 and #42. Adding the extra second-round pick would be massive for the Giants. They do not own a third-round pick in 2026. In the 2025 draft, New York traded the Houston Texans their third-round selection for pick #25. The Giants then selected quarterback Jaxson Dart.

With picks #8 and #10 in the first round, New York could still walk away with top talent from this year’s draft. Daniel Jeremiah from the NFL Network noted that safeties tend to fall in the draft. That could leave Ohio State’s Caleb Downs on the board for New York at #8. They could use the 10th overall pick on an offensive player, whether that be an offensive lineman or a wide receiver. New York has been linked to Arizona State wide receiver Jordyn Tyson.

New York trades pick #5 to Washington for pick #7 and pick #71

The next trade scenario for New York on Thursday evening is from Nick Falato. He is a co-host of the Big Blue View podcast and writes about the Giants. In a recent article, Falato predicted that the team would trade pick #5 to the Washington Commanders for picks #7 and #71. New York would move back just two spots from pick #5. Falato has Washington trading up to select Ohio State wide receiver Carnell Tate.

With the 7th overall pick, Falato believes that Ohio State’s Caleb Downs will be available. Downs has been a popular selection for draft analysts when they pick for the Giants. At pick #10, Falato has New York taking interior offensive lineman out of Penn State, Olavaega Ioane. The team is searching for a long-term answer at right guard, and Ioane would fill the void.

In this hypothetical trade, the Giants also acquire pick #71 from the Commanders. That is an early third-round pick, something the team doesn’t currently have. New York traded their third-round pick last year to the Texans to acquire pick #25. The team then chose quarterback Jaxson Dart. Nick Falato has the Giants selecting Georgia State wide receiver Ted Hurst with the third-round pick in the trade with Washington. New York will receive trade calls on Thursday night.
