The Washington Commanders<\/a> draft rumors have been running rampant over the past couple of months. The closer the draft gets, the less clarity there seems to be around what Washington will do with the seventh overall pick.<\/p>\n That uncertainty is not coming from a lack of options. It is coming from too many.<\/p>\n ESPN\u2019s John Keim<\/a> made that clear when discussing Washington\u2019s position during an interview with JP Finlay and Brian Mitchell on 106.7 the Fan.<\/p>\n \u201cThere are a handful of guys who all make sense\u2026 there\u2019s a lot of guys there, and that\u2019s the good thing for them, but it\u2019s the hard thing when you\u2019re trying to figure it out,\u201d Keim said.<\/em><\/p>\n That is the balancing act. Flexibility sounds great until you actually have to make the call.<\/p>\n One thing that continues to stand out is how Washington is approaching this pick philosophically.<\/p>\n There is no guarantee as to whether they are leaning offense or defense. But one thing is for certain and that is that they need impact players.<\/p>\n \u201cI think it\u2019s more about getting a high impact player\u2026 whatever side of the ball that is, because they don\u2019t have enough of those guys,\u201d Keim said. \u201cYou need dudes.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n That concept sounds simple enough. The Commanders<\/a> need to find a difference maker and figure the rest out later.<\/p>\n Because there are multiple players graded similarly, the idea of trading down is still a real possibility.<\/p>\n Keim laid out in what situation it makes sense to trade down.<\/p>\n \u201cIf you\u2019re sitting there and you like all these guys about the same, you can trade back several spots and still get one of them,\u201d he said.<\/em><\/p>\n At the same time, there is a clear warning attached to that approach.<\/p>\n \u201cYou need high impact players\u2026 you might get more good players, but you need some high impact guys too, and just acquiring more picks doesn\u2019t make it a good draft,\u201d Keim added.<\/em><\/p>\n Even after free agency, the defense remains one of the biggest areas to address.<\/p>\n JP Finlay<\/a> pointed to the frustration from last season, where the Commanders<\/a> consistently found themselves digging out of early holes.<\/p>\n Keim agreed there has been progress, but stopped short of making any guarantees.<\/p>\n \u201cI think they\u2019re definitely better\u2026 significantly would be tough to say without having watched them,\u201d he said.<\/em><\/p>\n That uncertainty is part of the reason defense continues to feel like a strong possibility at No. 7.<\/p>\nImpact Players Are of the Utmost Importance<\/h3>\n
