How the players were used, and which groupings they came out with in the preseason matters for a lot of players roster standing. Things will change and this is a fluid situation, but as of now, this is how the Steelers 53-man roster should look.<\/p>\n<h2>Pittsburgh Steelers 53-Man Roster Projection<\/h2>\n<h3>Quarterback (3)<\/h3>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/R\/RoetBe00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ben Roethlisberger<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/J\/JoneLa02.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Landry Jones<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/lwosonnfl.ms.lastwordonsports.com\/2017\/04\/06\/josh-dobbs-2017-nfl-draft-profile\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Joshua Dobbs<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The quarterback position is essentially set in stone. Dobbs showed on Friday that he has work to do to catch Landry Jones as a backup. However, he also showed he is leaps and bounds better than Bart Houston and has a firm lock on his job.<\/p>\n<h3>Running back (3)<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Le\u2019Veon Bell, James Connor, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/T\/TousFi00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Knile Davis<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Bell has not shown up to camp, but he will, likely after the second or third preseason game. Fitzgerald Toussaint started over <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/D\/DaviKn00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Knile Davis.\u00a0\u00a0<\/a><\/strong>However<strong>, <\/strong>it can be argued that Davis was the better runner. Davis started over Toussaint on special teams, and proved valuable as a lead\u00a0blocker. Toussaint holds a slim lead as of now, but it should begin to fall into the hands of Davis. The competition will be worth watching.<\/p>\n<h3>Fullback (1)<\/h3>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=NixxRo01,NixxRo20&amp;search=Roosevelt+Nix&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Roosevelt Nix<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Nix is an easy lock after a strong performance last season.<\/p>\n<h3>Wide Receiver (6)<\/h3>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=BrowAn04,BrowAn01&amp;search=Antonio+Brown&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Antonio Brown<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/B\/BryaMa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Martavis Bryant<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/R\/RogeEl00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Eli Rogers<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/lwosonnfl.ms.lastwordonsports.com\/2017\/03\/01\/juju-smith-schuster-2017-nfl-draft-profile\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">JuJu Smith-Schuster<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/H\/HeywDa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Darrius Heyward-Bey<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/C\/CoatSa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sammie Coates<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The first four players are absolute locks to make it. Heyward-Bey and Coates are on the fringe. However, none of the lower receivers did much to make a case over these two. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/H\/HuntJu00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Justin Hunter<\/a><\/strong> had been making noise in camp, but could not get healthy enough to play in the preseason. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/A\/AyerDe00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Demarcus Ayers<\/a><\/strong> best chance to make the team was returning punts. However, the team did not give him a chance in that area in the first game. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/H\/HamiCo00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cobi Hamilton<\/a><\/strong> had a strong game, but likely still sits around eight or nine on the depth chart.<\/p>\n<h3>Tight End (3)<\/h3>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=JameJe00,JameJe21&amp;search=Jesse+James&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jesse James<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/G\/GrimXa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Xavier Grimble<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=JohnDa05,JohnDa08&amp;search=David+Johnson&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">David Johnson<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This position should be pretty set in stone. <strong>Phazahn Odom<\/strong> saw some snaps in the first preseason game, but he is still far away and a likely candidate for the practice squad.<\/p>\n<h3>Offensive Line (8)<\/h3>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/V\/VillAl00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alejandro Villanueva<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/D\/DeCaDa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">David DeCastro<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/P\/PounMa20.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Maurkice Pouncey<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/F\/FostRa21.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ramon Foster<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/G\/GilbMa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Marcus Gilbert<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/H\/HubbCh00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chris Hubbard<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/F\/FinnB.01.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">B.J. Finney<\/a>, Jerald Hawkins<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There is little competition at this spot either. The five starters, plus Hubbard and Finney are locked into their spots and roles. Hawkins will be competing with <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/F\/FeilMa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Matt Feiler<\/a><\/strong> and <strong>Brian Mihalik<\/strong> for the last spot. None of the three were strong in the preseason, but Feiler may have stood out the most. However, given that a draft pick was invested in Hawkins, he does get the edge.<\/p>\n<h3>Defensive Line (6)<\/h3>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/H\/HeywCa01.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cameron Heyward<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/T\/TuitSt00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Stephon Tuitt<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/H\/HargJa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Javon Hargrave<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/A\/AluaTy99.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tyson Alualu<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/W\/WaltLe00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Leterrius Walton<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/M\/MaxeJo00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Johnny Maxey<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The three starters and Alualu are set in stone. Walton spent some time shifting between end and nose tackle in the preseason game, and his versatility and experience on the unit should ensure his spot. With Walton being able to slide into the middle at times, it gives the Steelers a true debate between Maxey and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/M\/McCuDa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Daniel McCullers<\/a><\/strong>. Maxey has shown more on the field and has had more time with the number twos than McCullers giving him the edge.<\/p>\n<h3>Edge Rushers (5)<\/h3>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/H\/HarrJa23.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">James Harrison<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/D\/DuprAl00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bud Dupree<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/lwosonnfl.ms.lastwordonsports.com\/2017\/03\/15\/t-j-watt-2017-nfl-draft-profile\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">T.J. He may have entered camp in a battle with rookie <strong>Keion Adams<\/strong>. Unfortunately, Adams has missed time with some injury issues. This provided Moats will all of the snaps he needed to show his value as a veteran performer. Adams should be able to slide into the practice squad.<\/p>\n<h3>Linebackers (5)<\/h3>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/S\/ShazRy00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ryan Shazier<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=WillVi01,WillVi00&amp;search=Vince+Williams&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vince Williams<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/M\/MataTy00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tyler Matakevich<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/J\/JohnSt02.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Steven Johnson<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/F\/FortL.00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">L.J. Fort<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>These five should be all locked in as well. Johnson, Fort, and Matakevich all provide strong special teams value. Williams will no longer play special teams with his promotion to starter, so the need for all three is there.<\/p>\n<h3>Cornerback (6)<\/h3>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/B\/BurnAr00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Artie Burns<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/C\/CockRo00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ross Cockrell<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=GayxWi99,GayxWi20&amp;search=William+Gay&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">William Gay<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/S\/SensCo00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Coty Sensabaugh<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/lwosonnfl.ms.lastwordonsports.com\/2017\/03\/12\/cameron-sutton-2017-nfl-draft-profile\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cameron Sutton<\/a>, Mike Hilton<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Hilton is the new name on the roster. He is the backup slot corner, and started on special teams as a gunner, making the first tackle of the preseason game.
