The league’s “legal tampering” period definitely hasn’t disappointed over the first 48 hours. Blockbuster deals are happening all across the NFL. A certain blockbuster, on the other hand, apparently isn’t happening. News of Maxx Crosby’s trade from the Las Vegas Raiders to the Baltimore Ravens being called off sent shockwaves across the league. While not involved in any of today’s biggest transactions, the Lions continued to be mildly active. In case you missed any of the day’s moves, here is my Detroit Lions’ free agency day two recap:

Brad Holmes Brings Back Important Pieces

The Lions came into the offseason with many important players scheduled to become free agents. A key piece of success is being able to retain your own, and GM Brad Holmes accomplished that today. Yesterday saw four Lions move elsewhere. Alex Anzalone, Amik Robertson, Roy Lopez, and Kyle Allen became former Lions. Today, Brad Holmes made sure two critical defensive players remained in Detroit.

1. Rock Ya-Sin, Cornerback

My top pick for free agents the Lions should retain, Holmes ensured Rock Ya-Sin will be back for 2026. Ya-Sin proved to be a valuable addition in 2025. As injuries piled up in the secondary, the veteran cornerback became a key player for the Lions. After a year in which Ya-Sin recorded 47 tackles and a career high nine PBU’s, his efforts were rewarded with a one-year, $4 million deal for 2026. That number is a significant raise from Ya-Sin’s previous $1.17 million salary.

With Ya-Sin staying in Detroit, the Lions keep a player who can play multiple roles. PFF gave him a 67.6 coverage grade. That above-average mark shows Ya-Sin can still hold his own and could compete for a starting spot. As a reserve, the experienced Ya-Sin can be trusted to fill in at a moment’s notice. An under-the-radar move like this can pay big dividends for the Lions in 2026.

2. Malcolm Rodriguez, Linebacker

Rodriguez was another free agent I considered important to resign. After the expiration of his rookie deal, the 2022 sixth-round pick will return to Detroit for another season. With longtime Lion Alex Anzalone leaving for Tampa Bay, “Rodrigo” figures to see an increased role this year. Depending on how the rest of free agency and the draft develop, the 26-year-old Rodriguez could wind up a pivotal player for the Lions in 2026.

The fan favorite agreed to a one-year contract, allowing him to reach free agency again in 2027, another year removed from an ACL tear in November 2024, which caused Rodriguez to miss much of the 2025 season. Financial terms have not been disclosed.

Lions’ Notable Additions

Brad Holmes didn’t spend the day focusing solely on keeping his own players. He also brought in two newcomers to address notable roster needs.

1. Teddy Bridgewater, Quarterback

Make that just one newcomer, as Teddy Bridgewater returns for another stint in Motown. After losing backup QB Kyle Allen to Buffalo, the Lions were in desperate need of a capable QB2. Enter the ageless Teddy Bridgewater, who returns after spending last year with the Bucs.

Bridgewater was Jared Goff’s backup in 2023. While he never saw meaningful game action, HC Dan Campbell couldn’t stop heaping praise upon the former first-round pick. Whether running the scout team or spending extra time helping the Lions’ young wide receivers, especially Jameson Williams, refine their game, Bridgewater proved to be an invaluable member of the team.

After retiring before the 2024 season to coach high school ball, Bridgewater returned to Detroit to serve as Goff’s backup for the playoffs. With Teddy back, the Lions can focus on acquiring a young, cheap QB to develop for the future.

2. Isiah Pacheco, Running Back

Also agreeing to terms with the Lions was running back Isiah Pacheco. The former Kansas City Chiefs RB comes to town on yet another one-year contract with figures that have not been publicized. Pacheco’s arrival fills the massive hole in the Lions’ backfield that resulted from David Montgomery being traded to Houston.

In Kansas City, the former seventh-round pick burst onto the scene with 830 and 935 rushing yards in his first two years. The last two seasons, however, have not been as kind to Pacheco. After a fractured fibula limited him to just seven games in 2024, Pacheco has not been the same player. The two-time Super Bowl champion has wallowed in a timeshare with Kareem Hunt since.

Now with the Lions, Pacheco will have a large role as Montgomery’s replacement. The 5’10, 216-pound RB is a physical runner who can perfectly complement superstar Jahmyr Gibbs. Known for his ability to break tackles, Pacheco is a good bet to revive his career with the Lions.

Key Departure

1. Kalif Raymond, Wide Receiver

Not all the moves the Lions made on Tuesday were additions. Detroit bid farewell to WR Kalif Raymond, who came to the Lions in 2021. The 31-year-old speedster was an All-Pro punt returner during his tenure in Detroit, but his role on offense had been significantly lessened over the last two years.

Raymond is signing a one-year, $3.5 million deal with the division rival Chicago Bears, where he will be reunited with both Ben Johnson and Antwaan Randle El. While Raymond’s exit allows the Lions to get younger at receiver, it also creates an opening as punt returner, which must be addressed.

Raymond’s leaving Detroit was not unexpected, but it is still sad to see a player who spent so much time with the Lions move on. Raymond stuck out a rebuilding process with the team, and I’m glad he got to experience the Lions’ ascent to contention. I wish Raymond nothing but the best in Chicago (while going 0-17).

Wednesday Could Be A Big Day

Wednesday is the official start of the new league year. New contracts will actually be signed. While several players I hoped would become Lions, like Riq Woolen and Leo Chenal, are signing elsewhere, there are plenty of good players left.

Trey Hendrickson, who would look great in Honolulu Blue, is expected to decide his next team on Wednesday. Though I have not heard anything about the Lions actually being involved, I still have hope he winds up in Detroit.

Maxx Crosby is back on the market. Reports indicated that Brad Holmes was willing to pay a steep price to pair him with Aidan Hutchinson. Will the Lions re-enter the mix for Crosby? I guess we will have to wait and see.

Day two of the NFL’s tampering period saw more new faces coming to Detroit.
