The talks between the Lions and Las Vegas Raiders, despite overwhelming support from inside the Lions’ organization, have now been put on hold.

Further reporting from Yahoo states:

“According to many in league circles, Detroit general manager Brad Holmes was more than willing to be aggressive to meet the trade demands of the Las Vegas Raiders, which included parting ways with two first-round draft picks.”

The willingness to part with significant draft capital is a huge departure from how Holmes usually operates. He highly values his draft picks and prefers to keep them instead of using them to trade for high-priced veterans. And for good reason. Detroit’s draft hauls from 2021-2023 have formed the foundation of the team becoming a legit Super Bowl contender. The Lions’ past two drafts, on the other hand, have not brought the immediate impact of the three prior classes. Those drafts include Terrion Arnold, whom the team traded up to draft in the first round in 2024.

The Lions fell incredibly short of expectations in 2025, failing even to reach the playoffs. That disappointment came on the heels of Detroit losing its first playoff game the season before, a 45-31 home defeat at the hands of the Washington Commanders, following a franchise-best 15-2 regular season that saw Detroit earn its first-ever number-one seed.

Those failures seem to have lit a fire under Holmes. His newfound aggression when it comes to improving the team should be a welcome sight to Lions’ fans. It is a shame that unforeseen circumstances have possibly cost the Lions a franchise-altering player like Maxx Crosby. The star edge-rusher, who hails from Michigan, could have given the Lions a lethal pass-rushing duo along with Aidan Hutchinson.

Why Is Arnold’s Situation Holding Up A Trade?

While Terrion Arnold is not thought to be part of a Maxx Crosby trade, his potential involvement in a felony kidnapping and robbery is a dark cloud hanging over the Lions’ organization. Though Arnold has not been arrested or charged with any crimes, his mere mention in a Florida court order could bring massive consequences.

Even if Arnold is never charged with anything, the Lions’ starting cornerback may still be subjected to NFL discipline. Players who are never convicted of a crime (or even charged) are suspended regularly. The NFL defends the shield above all else.

With an Arnold suspension likely, the Lions now find themselves with a very real short-term need at cornerback. If Arnold does end up in real legal trouble, the Lions’ need at the position becomes long-term. It will take plenty of time for the legal system to run its course. With free agency and the draft approaching, time is something the Lions do not have.

That uncertainty is now causing Detroit to balk at parting with the multiple first-round picks it will take to make a trade for Crosby. Adding a superstar edge rusher is a luxury for the Lions. Finding a starting-level cornerback would become a necessity if Terrion Arnold is unavailable.

With needs all over the roster, the Lions have, understandably, become uncomfortable with the idea of giving up their draft picks, even for a player as great as Maxx Crosby.

Hopefully, the Terrion Arnold situation reaches a quick resolution. If the Lions at least know what, if any, punishment Arnold is facing, they can proceed accordingly. For now, Brad Holmes has to operate as though Arnold will not be available. It is always possible that trade talks for Crosby can resume in the future. As it stands, Arnold’s shaky play and shoulder injury are not the only obstacles the Lions must worry about.

Main Image: David Reginek-Imagn Images

Ouch.
