The new pass game coordinator is <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/2025\/06\/17\/jared-goff-john-morton-lions-2025\/\" target=\"_self\">John Morton<\/a>, who has a deep history in the NFL, having played and coached for many teams. Here\u2019s more information on Morton\u2019s coaching resume in recent years.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">New York Jets (2017)<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Morton, who\u2019s originally from Auburn Hills, Michigan, attended Avondale High School and played collegiately at Western Michigan as a wide receiver. Morton went undrafted in 1993 and spent time on the practice squads of the Oakland Raiders, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/category\/nfl-teams\/packers\/\" target=\"_self\">Green Bay Packers<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/category\/nfl-teams\/jaguars\/\" target=\"_self\">Jacksonville Jaguars<\/a> during his NFL career, while also playing in the Canadian Football League.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Since 1998, Morton has been a devoted football coach, coaching for the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/category\/nfl-teams\/raiders\/\" target=\"_self\">Raiders<\/a>, the<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">University of San Diego, the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/category\/nfl-teams\/saints\/\" target=\"_self\">New Orleans Saints<\/a>, USC, the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/category\/nfl-teams\/49ers\/\" target=\"_self\">San Francisco 49ers<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/category\/nfl-teams\/jets\/\" target=\"_self\">New York Jets<\/a>, the Broncos, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/category\/nfl-teams\/lions\/\" target=\"_self\">Detroit Lions<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In 2017, Morton joined the Jets staff as the team&#8217;s offensive coordinator under <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/2026\/01\/07\/todd-bowles-leaves-door-open-on-buccaneers-core-veterans\/\" target=\"_self\">Todd Bowles<\/a>, but the stint was short-lived as the organization decided to part ways with Morton in January of 2018.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Oakland \/ Las Vegas Raiders (2019-2021)<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">As someone who coached the Raiders from 1998-2004, Morton returned to the Raiders in 2019 to be a senior offensive assistant under <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/2021\/10\/15\/whats-next-at-head-coach-for-the-raiders\/\" target=\"_self\">Jon Gruden<\/a>. It was definitely a different experience for him because even though Morton returned to Oakland, the team moved to Las Vegas before he decided to leave the organization.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Detroit Lions (2022)<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/2025\/12\/03\/dan-campbell-on-detroit-lions-feeling-urgency-not-panic\/\" target=\"_self\">Dan Campbell<\/a> brought in Morton to be the team&#8217;s senior offensive assistant in 2022, a year in which the Lions didn\u2019t make the playoffs but posted a 9-8 record and placed second in the NFC North. Morton was on an offensive staff that helped contribute to the success of the team&#8217;s only Pro Bowlers that year, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/2025\/12\/02\/amon-ra-st-brown-injury-update-lions-wr-cowboys\/\" target=\"_self\">Amon-Ra St. Brown<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/2024\/07\/23\/why-detroit-lions-ot-penei-sewell-cant-let-up\/\" target=\"_self\">Penei Sewell<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/2024\/07\/18\/detroit-lions-center-frank-ragnow-finally-gain-some-respect\/\" target=\"_self\">Frank Ragnow<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/2026\/01\/12\/jared-goff-not-cause-detroit-lions-collapse\/\" target=\"_self\">Jared Goff<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Denver Broncos (2023-2024)<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/2023\/10\/18\/sean-paytons-hidden-agenda-denver-broncos\/\" target=\"_self\">Sean Payton<\/a>, who Morton had coached alongside on the Saints from 2015 to 2016, hired Morton as the team&#8217;s passing game coordinator in February of 2023.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In his first season with the Broncos, things were shaky: the Broncos finished 8-9 and didn\u2019t qualify for the playoffs. The following season, Morton maintained the same role and worked with <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/2026\/01\/18\/broncos-qb-bo-nix-suffers-season-ending-ankle-injury-in-divisional-round-win\/\" target=\"_self\">Bo Nix<\/a>, who the team drafted after deciding to part ways with <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/2026\/02\/02\/russell-wilson-addresses-jeffrey-epstein-connection-in-latest-tweet\/\" target=\"_self\">Russell Wilson<\/a> in the offseason.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Morton played a big role in helping develop Nix in his first NFL season. The team improved next season, finishing with a 10-7 record and making the playoffs before losing to the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/category\/nfl-teams\/bills\/\" target=\"_self\">Buffalo Bills<\/a> in the Wild Card round.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Detroit Lions (2025)<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In 2025, Morton returned to the Lions as offensive coordinator after <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/2025\/11\/28\/ben-johnson-message-win-vs-eagles\/\" target=\"_self\">Ben Johnson<\/a> left the team to become the head coach of the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/category\/nfl-teams\/bears\/\" target=\"_self\">Chicago Bears<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Returning to Detroit for one season wasn\u2019t the greatest experience for Morton, as the team finished with a 9-8 record but didn\u2019t qualify for the playoffs and finished dead last in the NFC North.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Lions offense didn\u2019t have the same success it once had under Johnson, and things became so bad that Morton was relieved of his duties as the team&#8217;s offensive coordinator in November, with Campbell taking over for the remainder of the season.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Early in January, the Lions decided to fire Morton, and a few weeks later, he returned to the Broncos in the postseason as a consultant. About a month later, Denver re-hired him to be the team&#8217;s pass game coordinator once again.
