Legette, a first-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, is a physical marvel and an elite athlete, but that raw ability has not translated into on-field results. The South Carolina product has plummeted down the depth chart, currently behind 2025 first-round pick Tetairoa McMillan and former undrafted free agent Jalen Coker.

Michael Pittman, meanwhile, is a good player being paid like a great one. The USC product signed a three-year, $70 million contract after a 1,100-yard 2023, but he’s now in the final year of his deal and isn’t a cost-effective option. The Colts wideout currently carries a $29 million cap hit, and Indianapolis can trade $24 million with a trade. With this in mind, ESPN’s Bill Barnwell believes the Panthers and Colts should agree to a trade.

“[Pittman] would have modest trade value as a WR2 for teams that aren’t spending a ton on their passing game, though,” Barnwell writes. “The Panthers fit the bill there, as Bryce Young, Jalen Coker, and Tetairoa McMillan are all on their rookie contracts…In return, the Colts would land a Day 3 pick and Legette, who is due just $4.4 million combined over the next two seasons.”

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOBWI6YbPJI" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 5400px; aspect-ratio: 5400/3831;" ></smartframe-embed>

Panthers, Colts Projected to Trade Xavier Legette, Michael Pittman

This trade sounds crazy at first, but a deeper dive shows why both the Panthers and Colts could be on board. From Carolina’s side, they need to do something to support the offense. The jury is still out on whether or not Bryce Young is a legitimate franchise quarterback, but he’s proven he can win in the right environment. McMillan and Coker both look like legitimate NFL weapons, but this team could use a veteran leader in the locker room.

Adam Thielen filled that role through the 2023 and 2024 seasons, and nobody stepped up in that capacity last year. Michael Pittman is a perfect choice to inherit this role, and he should have another few seasons of solid play in his tank. Maybe his days as a 1,000-yard receiver are in the past, but he, McMillan, and Coker will ensure Young has a plethora of reliable option on the field on any given snap.

Second Life in Indianapolis

The Colts, meanwhile, have $24 million reasons to get rid of Michael Pittman. While the team currently has $35.7 million in cap space, that number could decrease dramatically in the coming weeks. Wide receiver Alec Pierce needs a new contract, and the Colts must make a decision on Daniel Jones. Had Jones stayed healthy, Indianapolis would probably give him decent quarterback money. However, given his season-ending Achilles injury, the Colts might decide to use the franchise tag.

If this happens, Jones will account for $40.2 million against the salary cap. Trading Pittman would be the best way to keep Jones and Pierce without impacting the team’s ability to build a competitive roster. Legette might not pan out, but it can’t hurt to roll the dice on one of the league’s better athletes.

Main Photo: Thomas Shea – Imagn Images

The Carolina Panthers and Indianapolis Colts could agree to a trade that would send Michael Pittman and Xavier Legette to new homes

[36,30,12,6431
9094,7800,6390,7661,32429
post-265866","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-nfl-news","category-panthers","category-colts","category-nfl-teams","tag-alec-pierce","tag-indianapolis-colts-news","tag-michael-pittman","tag-panthers-featured","tag-xavier-legette
["GET
