He started five of his 16 games as a rookie, catching 32 passes for 386 yards and four touchdowns. Njoku became a starter the following year, recording 56 receptions, 639 receiving yards, and four touchdowns. He played in just four games, though, during the 2019 season due to injury.<amp-fx-flying-carpet height="600px"><amp-ad data-block-on-consent="" width="300" height="600" layout="fixed" type="doubleclick" data-slot="/15188745,22512265771/FS-lastwordonsports-AMP/AMP-FlyingCarpet" data-lazy-fetch="true" data-loading-strategy="1.25" rtc-config="{ "vendors": { "t13": { "TAG_ID": "f502adbd-5c9b-4d6f-9ec5-b0cdc0f4827c", "ACCOUNT_ID": "9a3c6c23-453a-4cba-b419-30b908f39a50" }, "aps": { "PUB_ID": "600", "PUB_UUID": "16268e26-dabe-4bf4-a28f-b8f4ee192ed3", "PARAMS": { "amp": "1" } }, "criteo": { "NETWORK_ID": "4905", "ZONE_ID": "1382491", "PUBLISHER_SUB_ID": "FS-lastwordonsports-AMP-FlyingCarpet" }, "medianet": { "CID": "8CU8ZT2C4" } } }"></amp-ad></amp-fx-flying-carpet>

Njoku was a solid contributor over the next few years. In 2023, he caught 81 passes for 882 yards and six touchdowns (all career-highs). But under new head coach Mike Vrabel’s leadership and the emergence of second-year quarterback Drake Maye, things turned around big time in 2025. The team went 14-3 and, of course, reached the Super Bowl, where they lost 29-13 to the Seattle Seahawks.

Maye had a phenomenal season, throwing for 4,394 yards and 31 touchdowns. He also finished as the runner-up for NFL MVP behind Matthew Stafford.

If the Patriots want to return to the Super Bowl, they must surround Maye with as much talent as possible. The team has a good tight end in Hunter Henry, who recorded 768 yards and a team-high seven touchdowns this past season.

Despite having Henry on the roster, signing David Njoku still makes sense. No, he isn’t a Prime Travis Kelce by any stretch of the imagination, but he’s a solid pass-catcher.

Pairing Njoku with Henry could transform the Patriots into one of the NFL’s top two-tight-end attacks. Plus, the duo could further accelerate Maye’s development. So yes, New England should sign Njoku this offseason.

Main Image: Scott Galvin-Imagn Images

After nine seasons with the Cleveland Browns, free agent tight end David Njoku could sign with the New England Patriots this offseason.

[6431,5
1683,10076,796,7394
post-265595","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-nfl-teams","category-patriots","tag-david-njoku","tag-drake-maye","tag-hunter-henry","tag-new-england-patriots-news
["GET
