After spending one season with the New York Giants, former Seahawks Super Bowl champion Russell Wilson intends to continue playing next season. Wilson isn’t looking to retire just yet<\/a>, despite the atrocious performance he put up as a starting quarterback for the first few weeks of the 2025 regular season. The veteran lost his starting job to rookie Jaxson Dart<\/a> after playing a few games, and even though the Giants didn’t have a winning season, the team looks to be heading in a direction with Dart as their permanent starter. Dart, Cam Skattebo and wide receiver Malik Nabers are the latest generation of talents for the Giants, along with new head coach John Harbaugh, so there isn’t room for Wilson anymore.<\/p>\n

However, it’s hard to imagine what type of role Russell Wilson will have anymore in the league, but there are a few teams that need a quarterback. Unfortunately, there are tons of quarterbacks that are going to become available via free agency or through the trade market. This does not make it easier for Wilson to find a job, especially given his age, but the 10-time Pro Bowler should have some interest at a cheap controlled cost.<\/p>\n

No one imagined that pending free agent Aaron Rodgers<\/a> would continue, and the same applies to Wilson. He isn’t going to demand a long-term contract, but a one-year deal makes sense season by season for the veteran. There’s still a chance for him to start, but he might have to fight for a starting role for these three teams if there is any interest out there for him.<\/p>\n

Possible Next Teams<\/h2>\n

Atlanta Falcons<\/h3>\n

With the Falcons expected to cut Kirk Cousins this offseason<\/a>, the team might be heading in a different direction in their quarterback search. It looks like the coast is clear for Michael Penix Jr.,<\/a> but that isn’t the case. The Falcons made headlines a few years ago when drafting Penix in the first-round despite signing Cousins to a long-term contract. Now, the team is paying the price, and with Penix coming off a season-ending injury, Matt Ryan is non-committal to Penix.<\/p>\n

He isn’t the head coach, but Kevin Stefanski is stepping in and could make a decision that doesn’t involve Penix. The Falcons could sign Wilson to a one-year contract if Penix continues to lack even when healthy, and may step into the starting role and lead this offense to at least a postseason appearance.<\/p>\n

Arizona Cardinals<\/h3>\n

Meanwhile, the Cardinals are also expected to move on from their own quarterback, Kyler Murray<\/a>. It’s almost 100% that Jacoby Brissett is their long-term quarterback, but the team must act quickly. After hiring Mike LaFleur<\/a>, the Cardinals will draft a quarterback in the first round, but Wilson is a low-stakes safety net option.<\/p>\n

He isn’t going to play for long, but it buys the new rookie time to develop as an adequate starter and learn from Wilson for at least two seasons.<\/p>\n

Las Vegas Raiders<\/h3>\n

If everything else fails for Wilson in his search, joining the Raiders might be the last resort. Geno Smith is coming off his worst season statistically last year. While the blame can be put on the offensive line and not having enough weapons, Smith had a hard time giving the Raiders a forgiving chance.<\/p>\n

After hiring Klint Kubiak and the team predicted to draft Fernando Mendoza<\/a>, the culture in Las Vegas looks like it’ll be shaping up soon. The Raiders shouldn’t rush Mendoza to start and sit for a year to learn from Wilson as a starter.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
