He rose quickly in their coaching ranks. In 2021, he was a defensive assistant coach. He was then promoted to safeties coach in 2022. This was Lions safety Kerby Joseph’s rookie year, who has had a meteoric rise since then. He had 4 interceptions in his first two seasons under Duker’s tutelage. In 2023, he was promoted again to defensive backs coach and helped develop another Lions rookie defensive back, Brian Branch. His familiarity with Glenn and ability to get the most out of players in his scheme are very promising.

The Jets are hiring Brian Duker as their new defensive coordinator, per @TomPelissero

Duker, who spent the last two seasons with the Dolphins, worked with Aaron Glenn on the Lions' staff from 2021-23 pic.twitter.com/c3b5Y5ofSn

— Jets Videos (@snyjets) January 28, 2026

Prior to his work in Detroit, Brian Duker was an assistant for the Ravens from 2018-20. The defensive coordinator in Baltimore during his time there was Don “Wink” Martindale, who was initially billed as the heavy favorite for this Jets job before Duker was hired. He also spent time with the Browns in 2015 and the 49ers in 2016. His defensive coordinator for both of those teams was another Jets 2026 candidate, Jim O’Neil. If the Jets were interested in these candidates at one point, someone who is familiar with their work may be seen as valuable. On top of his relationship with Glenn himself, his knowledge could be a great tool for the Jets head coach.

Who’s Calling the Plays Though?

The noticeable thing missing from Duker’s extensive coaching resume is any play-calling experience. The initial reporting was that Wink Martindale, an experienced candidate, was the frontrunner. He would take over the defense and call the plays if hired. However, reporting shifted over the last couple of days that Glenn was telling candidates that he himself would call plays. This type of hire (a lesser-known candidate) seemingly confirms this rumor. Brian Duker’s job as defensive coordinator will be to help with the defensive gameplan. His aforementioned knowledge of Glenn’s scheme should be of great help in this regard.

Projecting the Jets Defense With Glenn at the Reins

Determining how could the Jets defense can be in 2026 with Aaron Glenn calling the plays is difficult. The off-season hasn’t really started yet, which is an important time for the Jets considering all of their 2026 assets. Looking back on his years in Detroit, though, the numbers aren’t incredibly promising.

Here are Aaron Glenn’s defensive rankings as the #Lions play caller

YPG, PPG
2024: 20th, 7th
2023: 23rd, 23rd
2022: 32nd, 30th
2021: 29th, 31st

— Connor Hughes (@Connor_J_Hughes) January 28, 2026

He showed steady improvement, but Glenn may need to show immediate improvement if he wants to keep his job. If the Jets can have a season on defense similar to that of the 2024 season, that should be enough. Along with the solid YPG and PPG stats, the Lions also had a +9 turnover differential and 37 sacks. These would both be improvements from the 2025 Jets defense, which had 26 sacks and a -19 turnover differential.

In terms of the personnel, the Jets will have to make some improvements to help Glenn’s scheme. A sack artist is desperately needed on this defensive line. The Lions have Aidan Hutchinson, who has had double-digit sacks every year other than 2024, when he got injured. The Jets current EDGE rushers have not shown that type of prowess, but there could be improvement if they add to the room. A guy like Rueben Bain Jr. or David Bailey in the draft would go a long way. Another draft prospect to watch is safety Caleb Downs. Glenn and Brian Duker covet safeties, so they could think of him very highly. The Jets should also look to bring in some guys familiar with Glenn on defense. Some names to watch there include linebacker Alex Anzalone and defensive tackle D.J. Reader.

Overall, this is a solid hire by the Jets, considering how long the Jets took to do it. Duker is a solid outcome after a long hiring process, especially if Glenn is the one calling the plays.

Main Photo: [Junfu Han] – Imagn Images

Brian Duker is the new defensive coordinator for the Jets.
