While the former third-round pick is on the older side, he’s still one of the game’s better and more reliable linebackers. Through the first 16 games of the season, Davis has recorded 137 tackles, six tackles-for-loss, and the sixth-best PFF grade among eligible linebackers.

According to Nick Underhill of NewOlreans.Football, Demario Davis told the Saints media he will return for at least one more season, but it’s worth pointing out that he will be a free agent at the start of the 2026 league year. While the Saints obviously want him back, Davis’s comments suggest he won’t accept a team-friendly deal if a better offer is out there.

“I don’t think in terms of the business element before the business element presents itself,” Davis said. “We’re in a game where contracts do matter, but that’s such a small part of your career.”

Loading game...

        (function() {
            document.addEventListener('DOMContentLoaded', function() {
                if (typeof ChuckGamesEngine !== 'undefined') {
                    ChuckGamesEngine.init('chuck-game-dc3bd317', {"id":"6269203b-d5ea-4459-98ef-06188bc51a28","type":"lastout","description":"The Last Out: 06-25-26","contentNotes":null,"organizationName":null,"unit":null,"categoryName":"Default","gameDate":"2026-06-25","questions":[{"id":"a553dbd9-2ca4-4fef-9502-18dd0a8deb54","sequence":1,"question":"Which Southeast Division traded for Giannis Antetokounmpo earlier this week?","optionA":"Charlotte Hornets","optionB":"Miami Heat","optionC":"Orlando Magic","optionD":"Washington Wizards","answer":"B","funFact":"The Heat arguably have the league's best frontcourt now between Bam and Giannis and... not much else","answerStats":{"optionA":0,"optionB":90,"optionC":10,"optionD":0}},{"id":"ebab6b02-6578-4753-bb3a-85684558fd96","sequence":2,"question":"AT&T Stadium, Lincoln Financial Field, MetLife Stadium, and Northwest Stadium are collectively the home stadiums of all 4 teams in which NFL division?","optionA":"AFC South","optionB":"AFC West","optionC":"NFC East","optionD":"NFC North","answer":"C","funFact":"Those buildings house the Cowboys, Eagles, Giants, and Commanders, respectively","answerStats":{"optionA":0,"optionB":10,"optionC":90,"optionD":0}},{"id":"4fd00585-5cbf-4cca-8905-d9d851b04cb6","sequence":3,"question":"Commodores, Razorbacks, Volunteers, and Gamecocks are all nicknames of teams in which major conference?","optionA":"ACC","optionB":"Big 12","optionC":"Big Ten","optionD":"SEC","answer":"D","funFact":"The schools are Vanderbilt, Arkansas, Tennessee, and South Carolina, respectively","answerStats":{"optionA":0,"optionB":0,"optionC":0,"optionD":100}},{"id":"2b9bd2ac-a0ee-45ef-a390-418935841c5c","sequence":4,"question":"The San Antonio Spurs won their first of 5 titles on this date in 1999 against whom?","optionA":"Cleveland Cavaliers","optionB":"Detroit Pistons","optionC":"New Jersey Nets","optionD":"New York Knicks","answer":"D","funFact":"Tim Duncan and David Robinson overwhelmed the #8 seed Knicks, who were playing without an injured Patrick Ewing","answerStats":{"optionA":10,"optionB":0,"optionC":10,"optionD":80}},{"id":"ce4fde9e-c0c4-473d-8134-95ab95694e5a","sequence":5,"question":"Which MLB team won 3 straight division titles from 1990-1992 and hasn't won another one since?","optionA":"Athletics","optionB":"Baltimore Orioles","optionC":"Cincinnati Reds","optionD":"Pittsburgh Pirates","answer":"D","funFact":"The Pirates have only won 2 postseason games since losing Game 7 of the 1992 NLCS on Francisco Cabrera's walk-off single","answerStats":{"optionA":33,"optionB":11,"optionC":22,"optionD":34}},{"id":"ce9ca94a-8f13-4638-b993-199cdcc82054","sequence":6,"question":"The first College Football Playoff was played in which season?","optionA":"1998","optionB":"2006","optionC":"2014","optionD":"2024","answer":"C","funFact":"Ohio State won the inaugural playoff in 2014, beating Alabama 42-35 in the Semis, and Oregon 42-20 in the Championship Game","answerStats":{"optionA":12,"optionB":0,"optionC":63,"optionD":25}},{"id":"eb2a30e7-aace-4896-bccc-21f04b3d2dad","sequence":7,"question":"Who was the fastest expansion franchise (excluding mergers) across all major sports to win a championship?","optionA":"Arizona Diamondbacks","optionB":"Milwaukee Bucks","optionC":"Portland Trail Blazers","optionD":"Vegas Golden Knights","answer":"B","funFact":"The Bucks won the NBA Finals in year 3, after drafting Kareem Abdul-Jabbar first overall in 1969 and signing Oscar Robertson a year later","answerStats":{"optionA":25,"optionB":12,"optionC":0,"optionD":63}},{"id":"3346cc69-e8bc-4ec0-b12e-de7efdf9d26f","sequence":8,"question":"Victor Wembanyama finished each of his first 3 seasons with 20+ PPG, 10+ RPG, and 3+ BPG. Mandatory Credit: Steve Roberts-Imagn Images

Demario Davis Will Play In 2026, Could Leave Saints

Based on his comments, it’s clear Demario Davis isn’t too worried about negotiating his next contract, and there is a good chance he’ll re-sign with the Saints. After all, the team needs someone at the center of their defense, and it’s unlikely Davis breaks the bank heading into his age-37 season. The future is bright with second-round pick Tyler Shough under center, as the rookie looks like the real deal and should have this team in the thick of the NFC South race next year.

New Orleans does not have a championship roster, but it could make the playoffs next year. The NFC South is notoriously weak, and there’s a case to be made that the Saints could have won the division this year had they started Shough from Week 1, instead of second-year quarterback Spencer Rattler. Having a franchise quarterback on a rookie contract is one of the biggest competitive advantages in sports, so re-signing an older veteran like Demario Davis makes sense for both sides.

Other Potential Fits

Of course, there is a chance Demario Davis leaves for greener pastures in a few months. While it’s admittedly unlikely at this stage in his career, other teams could offer him more money or a better chance of ending his career with a deep playoff run.

While anyone could make a move for his services, the Los Angeles Chargers seem like the best fit. Quarterback Justin Herbert and head coach Jim Harbaugh have already clinched a playoff spot, and the team has over $103 million in cap space for the upcoming season. If the Chargers play their cards right, they could have one of the league’s most talented rosters next year. Injuries derailed them in 2025, yet they still made the playoffs. Imagine what they could become once everyone’s healthy and all that money is invested in fortifying the depth chart.

Main Photo: Steve Roberts – Imagn Images

New Orleans Saints linebacker Demario Davis will not retire and plans to return to the field for the 2026 season.

[36,28,6431
2553,7659
post-261354","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-nfl-news","category-saints","category-nfl-teams","tag-demario-davis","tag-saints-featured
["GET
