That’s exactly what happened to the Bucs on Sunday night. One moment, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers were grinding through a tough NFC showdown. Next, their star QB collapsed to the turf. Baker Mayfield went down on the final play of the first half against the Los Angeles Rams. The whole offense watched from the sideline as their leader emerged with an arm sling. It looked bad. Real bad.

Much like in Broadway, the star gets all the marquee lights in the NFL. The understudy? They practice every line in the shadows. But the show must go on. And that’s the situation Todd Bowles faces right now. Coaches hate quarterback controversies. But they despise uncertainty even more. Bowles now has both. The Buccaneers left SoFi Stadium with a 34-7 loss… But above all, a massive question mark at the most important position.

Nov 23, 2025; Inglewood, California, USA; Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach and defensive coordinator Todd Bowles looks on before the game against the Los Angeles Rams at SoFi Stadium.

Tweaking the Engine after Baker Mayfield’s Injury

You don’t just plug and play when your starting quarterback goes down. And Todd Bowles was crystal clear about the necessary adjustments. He stated the offense will need a recalibration for veteran Teddy Bridgewater if he is to start. “Well, he’s a different quarterback,” Bowles explained. “So schematically, we’ll have to do some different things for him to make him feel comfortable within the offense and do a lot of things that he likes to do.”

“He’s a different quarterback, so schematically, we’ll have to do some different things for him to make him feel comfortable,” Todd Bowles said, signaling O-line changes for Teddy Bridgewater.

More on the presser: https://t.co/xmQovZ4fDG pic.twitter.com/wIZuLR46sy

— Gourab Saha (@gourabsaha666) November 25, 2025

Baker Mayfield’s MRI gives hope. But Bucs’ game plan may favor Bridgewater’s strengths now. Bowles emphasized making him “feel comfortable within the offense.” That probably means a greater emphasis on quicker throws and managed reads. Bowles also confirmed the severity of Baker Mayfield’s injury on Monday. “When he came off the field and you kind of knew something happened right there,” the HC said. Meanwhile, Bridgewater flew in from Miami on Sunday morning.

He attended a funeral before the game. Teddy completed 8 of 15 passes for 62 yards. He took two sacks. The Rams defense smelled blood. They attacked relentlessly. And the scoreboard told the story. “If it’s my turn, I’ve got to answer the bell,” Bridgewater said afterward. But you could hear the weariness in his voice. This wasn’t the ideal scenario for a comeback.

Bowles has expressed confidence in the veteran backup. “I’m very confident in what Teddy can do with a full week of practice,” he said. He also emphasized Bridgewater’s experience. “Teddy knows what to do. He’s been around this league a long time,” said Todd. That tells you something! But the NFC South remains wide open.

The Bucs face the Cardinals next Sunday. They need a plan. They need it fast. Bowles knows the offense must change. That leads to the bigger question. How much will they need to tweak?

The Teddy Bridgewater Blueprint

The Buccaneers’ offensive line struggled against the Rams. They allowed constant pressure. The running game cracked 100 yards again. Bowles? He dismissed any positives. “We’re pissed off. We’ve got everything in front of us, but a lot of work to do,” he said. The coach refused to sugarcoat the performance. Los Angeles out-executed them at every level. That can’t happen again.

Bridgewater’s last start came in 2022 with Miami. The Patriots edged them 23-21. That feels like ages ago in NFL years. The league chews up quarterbacks and spits them out. Bridgewater has survived for 11 seasons. He’s thrown 75 touchdown passes. He understands protections. The guys trust him. Bowles emphasized this point repeatedly. But has his arm still got that zip?

This injury saga represents more than one player. It tests organizational depth. Challenges coaching adaptability. And it reveals whether a team built for contention can survive its worst nightmare. The Rams’ loss stung. The injury hurt worse. But the season isn’t over. Not yet. Not while the NFC South remains within reach. Bridgewater has his chance now. He’s answered the bell before. He just needs to answer it again.

Main Photo: Jayne Kamin-Oncea-Imagn Images

Baker Mayfield’s injury forces Tampa Bay to shift gears as Todd Bowles prepares a revamped offense tailored to Teddy Bridgewater.

[6431,29
63
post-256223","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-nfl-teams","category-buccaneers","tag-teddy-bridgewater
["GET
