There’s hope that he could return for another season in 2026 since he’s still under control, but that’s something Houston will have to think about, as it’s a gamble to keep him at this stage. Originally selected in the second round and spending most of his career with the Bengals, Cincinnati traded him to Houston, where he recorded over 1,000 rushing yards and Pro Bowl honors.

Breaking: Latest Texans Brutal Joe Mixon Injury May Signal Offseason Release

This is where it becomes difficult. Mixon was just becoming a promising addition to CJ Stroud’s ground game, but he might not return to his old self. Houston attempted to make up for his loss by signing running back Nick Chubb, despite his own injury woes. As long as Chubb can stay healthy, the Texans might stick with him over Mixon, depending on what works for the Texans in terms of salary cap. If Houston does him a favor to let him heal up in the offseason, here are three teams that could take a chance on him to start fresh.

1. Dallas Cowboys

While the Dallas Cowboys found some life in their run game with Javonte Williams, the running back unit remains something that’s still unresolved. Williams is tapering off with his production in the latest few games, but there are still several matchups left for him to make up for. Either way, Dallas needs another reliable backfield piece to help Williams if the Cowboys decide to extend him. Even though Mixon has lost a step in his career, the veteran could be a versatile weapon to power through defenders in situational moments as a backup.

The Cowboys experimented with Miles Sanders as their RB2 while rookie Jaydon Blue was developing. Blue isn’t ready, and the Cowboys are hoping he isn’t a bust similar to former Cowboy Mazi Smith, on defense. Mixon could fill the much-needed void for next season.

Sep 28, 2025; Arlington, Texas, USA; Dallas Cowboys running back Javonte Williams (33) runs against Green Bay Packers defensive end Micah Parsons (1) and safety Evan Williams (33) in the second quarter at AT&T Stadium. Kansas City Chiefs

As the Kansas City Chiefs are surprisingly 5-5, the team might need to overhaul its entire backfield. Isiah Pacheco hasn’t been the same since suffering from an injury from last season, which caused him to miss several games. With Kareem Hunt set to become a free agent in March, the starting duties as a running back in Kansas City are up for grabs. Perhaps Brashard Smith might be the next man up, but he’s going through growing pains.

If anything else, the Chiefs might settle for Mixon since the 2026 cap space isn’t working in their favor.

Sep 28, 2025; Kansas City, Missouri, USA; Baltimore Ravens tight end Mark Andrews (89) and Kansas City Chiefs running back Isiah Pacheco (10) greet each other on the field after the game at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium. Los Angeles Chargers

Even though head coach Jim Harbaugh wanted to help Justin Herbert with an efficient run game, it hasn’t gone as he wanted. With Najee Harris, Omarion Hampton and Hassan Haskins all having suffered injuries, the Chargers had to be dependent on Kimani Vidal for most of the starting reps. Hampton is the future of this ground game, but Harris’ future is up in the air. If Mixon is available, he isn’t the strongest in terms of size, but that might be what the Chargers need to push themselves for an excellent run game if there is any speed left.

Oct 5, 2025; Inglewood, California, USA; Los Angeles Chargers running back Omarion Hampton (8) runs against Washington Commanders nose tackle Daron Payne (94) in the first half at SoFi Stadium.
