However, the depth chart of the Packers’ ground game is something Jordan Love can’t lean on. Between Emanuel Wilson and Chris Brooks, Green Bay doesn’t have the experience to keep this run game intact, which could force them to consider looking into a veteran free agent.

Breaking: Josh Jacobs Injury News May Force Gus Edwards Signing

The good news is that the Packers can make a quick signing to improve the ground game. It won’t be pretty, but Gus Edwards could be a temporary answer to the depth woes. While he isn’t going to be a drastic change to this run game and might not eclipse at least 500 rushing yards this season, he’s better than what the Packers have on their roster. Originally selected as an undrafted rookie, the former Rutgers product lost his footing since he dealt with multiple injuries during his first NFL stint with the Baltimore Ravens.

Edwards joining the Packers could give him a solid opportunity if he stays healthy. The Packers are 6-3 and currently in a competitive NFC North division, so they must make some type of move to strengthen the run offense. However, here are three potential contenders that may dip their hand in the market for a quick move before January.

1. Dallas Cowboys

After trading for Quinnen Williams and Logan Wilson to improve its defense, the Dallas Cowboys are not looking to tank. This means the team signing Edwards would make sense to fill the void since losing veteran Miles Sanders a couple of weeks ago. Rookie Jaydon Blue isn’t the answer just yet since he’s still adjusting to the league. With Javonte Williams slowing down after somewhat of a breakout for the first few weeks, the Cowboys could use another temporary running back.

Edwards isn’t going to get Dallas in the Super Bowl, but it does buy Williams and Blue some snaps to rest and get amped up for the next play that becomes available.

Sep 28, 2025; Arlington, Texas, USA; Dallas Cowboys running back Javonte Williams (33) runs against Green Bay Packers defensive end Micah Parsons (1) and safety Evan Williams (33) in the second quarter at AT&T Stadium. New England Patriots

Another logical destination for Edwards would be joining the New England Patriots. They’re on fire, led by quarterback Drake Maye, but they shouldn’t lean too much of the workload on rookie Treveyon Henderson. He’s still a rookie, and the Patriots could use the experience. Mike Vrabel has the mindset to get something out of Edwards in situational moments, while Antonio Gibson recovers from his season-ending injury, and it gives Rhamondre Stevenson some rest on the bench.

Nov 9, 2025; Tampa, Florida, USA; New England Patriots running back Treveyon Henderson (32) walks off field following a game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Raymond James Stadium. Los Angeles Chargers, Again?

Yes, this signing might be the move the Los Angeles Chargers have to make. Rookie Omarion Hampton will return at full strength before the playoffs (if they make it), but they can’t afford to start him too soon. Luckily, current starter Kimani Vidal has been holding the ground game together for the time being. The Chargers should consider bringing back Edwards since he’s healthy again, at least on a one-year contract.

Oct 5, 2025; Inglewood, California, USA; Los Angeles Chargers running back Omarion Hampton (8) runs against Washington Commanders nose tackle Daron Payne (94) in the first half at SoFi Stadium.
