Every person in the world wants to be the highest paid person in his or her respective profession. Football, just like everything else, is a business. There is nothing wrong with Beckham saying this is one of his goals. This holds especially true when Odell Beckham Jr. is reporting to training camp and not holding out like other players (like Le’Veon Bell and Aaron Donald).

“He deserves to get paid. We’re gonna pay him. It’s just a question of when we enter into the contract,” Mara said. That quote by Giants owner John Mara says it all. Odell Beckham will be paid. It seems like every single person who follows the New York Giants is nervous about the “volatile” contract situation except Beckham and Mara themselves. Beckham even made sure to say that he doesn’t plan on holding out because he “don’t have time to hold out”. Unfortunately, the New York Media only heard “highest paid player” and decided to crucify Beckham.

Leave Odell Beckham Jr. Alone

Target on his back

Odell Beckham Jr. is the most dynamic player in the NFL. Yet, many people are knocking him down. This includes both Gary Myers, of the Daily News, who wrote an “open letter” to Beckham and Pat Leonard who has already called Beckham a “distraction”. What these “beat writers” are missing is the fact that the only person creating a distraction and controversy are themselves. Writers like them are the reason so much negative light is being drawn on Beckham when it is not even necessary.

He has had some growing pains

The problem with Beckham is that he does have a history with controversy. Back in 2015, he tried spearing Josh Norman in the head. Last year, Beckham had a run in with the kicking net during the Giants Week three loss to the Washington Redskins. The most recent problem Beckham had was when he went to Miami after a Week 17 victory against the Washington Redskins, a week before the Giants playoff matchup with the Green Bay Packers.

Owning his mistakes

Although Beckham has had his fair share of immaturity and growing pains, he has owned them and tried moving forward. Beckham issued an apology for when he “dropped the ball on sportsmanship” with his run in with Norman. He made amends with the kicking net the following weeks. He even admitted he created a distraction by going to Miami and seemed to regret doing so.

If his negatives are covered so should be his positives

Odell Beckham Jr. is a 24 year old who is on top of the world. OBJ will probably never be perfect. Also, he probably won’t handle every situation the way it should be handled. However, all the negative attention that these writers place on him only hurts him. People should not be knocking him down. Instead writers and reporters should cover stories such as the one where he flew all the way down to Texas to see a sick nine year-old boy. Unfortunately, that doesn’t create controversy so writers don’t like to cover stories like that.

It is time to leave him alone

Its time that writers leave Odell Beckham alone and not crucify him for every single thing he says to the media. It is extremely easy to get bits and pieces of what he says and contort it to create a nice and juicy negative story line. Writers and fans should, instead, actually support the Giants best player and hope he succeeds instead of fails. And now it’s time for Odell Beckham Jr. to ball out and have one heck of a career.

Main Photo

Embed from Getty Images

Odell Beckham Jr.: Odell Beckham Jr. needs to be left alone and not demonized by the New York media.
