In an odd world, the Detroit Lions could consider unloading on one of the talents as they have trade chip running back, David Montgomery, who may receive interest from teams this upcoming offseason. According to Bleacher Report<\/a>, it’s no surprise that the source named Montgomery as the best trade piece apart from their roster, since there is no way that they’re shipping Jahmyr Gibbs<\/a>. However, Montgomery could be the latest victim of a trade at some rate, and the source believes it may happen after the 2025 season. It’s all hypothetical for now since he hasn’t been in any trade rumors since joining the Lions in 2023.<\/p>\n

Lions Superstar David Montgomery Could Be “Trade Chip” After 2025 Season<\/h2>\n

It wouldn’t be the first time Montgomery would join a new team since spending the first few years with the Chicago Bears. After finishing off his rookie deal in Chicago, the running back joined their rival, the Lions, and became the main contributor to Detroit’s ground game. Despite that, Gibbs came into the equation and formed one of the most ferocious running back duos in the league, becoming the first pair of players in NFL history to combine for 1,000 yards. If it came down to deciding on which they would extend in the future, they might be more lenient to give Gibbs a long-term deal, given his age.<\/p>\n

This leaves Montgomery on the back burner. The trade itself is a long shot, but it’s still a fun one to discuss. Detroit probably would only consider dealing him if it came down to getting a starting cornerback in return, which they’ve dealt with multiple injuries in their secondary, and also a first-round pick. For the sake of this article, here are three dream teams for Montgomery.<\/p>\n

1. Los Angeles Chargers<\/h3>\n

After losing Najee Harris for the rest of the season<\/a>, it’s hard to imagine that the Chargers would consider bringing him back. While rookie Omarion Hampton is the future of this run offense, he hasn’t been consistent due to growing pains and nursing an injury for most of the 2025 campaign. Head coach Jim Harbaugh wants a physical downhill runner for Justin Herbert’s offense, and he might have to trade for one to make his wish come true. Hampton could benefit from the presence of Montgomery, similar to his performance with Gibbs.<\/p>\n

The Chargers have the cap space for it, so this might be the move that gets the Chargers back in the AFC Championship Game in 2027 if they pull off the trade in 2026.<\/p>\n

2. Jacksonville Jaguars<\/h3>\n

With the current starting running back, Travis Etienne<\/a>, set to become a free agent next offseason, the Jaguars will likely let him walk. The team already dealt Tank Bigsby this 2025 campaign before the deadline to the Eagles, so the Jaguars might be good enough with rookies, Bhayshul Tuten and LeQuint Allen Jr., to take over and share the snaps. However, quarterback Trevor Lawrence needs a true backfield with experience, and Liam Coen should go hard for Montgomery, who could get a more prominent role in Jacksonville in 2026 if traded.<\/p>\n

3. Denver Broncos<\/h3>\n

While rookie RJ Harvey<\/a> has shown a lot of positives this season, it can’t compensate for the loss of veteran J.K. Dobbins<\/a>. The Broncos have the pass attack and quarterback, Bo Nix, to lead head coach Sean Payton to the Super Bowl. However, they need to work on their backfield, and while they do have depth between Tyler Badie and Jaleel McLaughlin, none of them are experienced enough like Montgomery. If Denver misses out on a deep playoff run again, then they might have to trade for a superstar, and Montgomery might be the one to fill the void.<\/p>\n
