With the expectation that the Denver Broncos will lose running back JK Dobbins for multiple weeks due to a brutal foot injury, the team may target veteran Ezekiel Elliott for depth. Several news media outlets reported<\/a> that Dobbins will miss time and likely go on IR, potentially missing more than a month of football. It’s not the news that the Broncos want, even though they’re 8-2 and atop of their AFC West division, but rookie RJ Harvey<\/a> will be taking over as the primary contributor for the team’s ground game. Unfortunately, the injury bug continues to suck the blood of Dobbins, but that means they should call for help in free agency with a veteran who has experience.<\/p>\n

Broncos Could Sign Free Agent Ezekiel Elliott After JK Dobbins Injury<\/h2>\n

The Broncos could pursue the idea of looking into Elliott. At age 30, the veteran might not be the same massive workhorse like he once was, but he’s still available for a few solid seasons. They can’t afford to lean on the shoulder of Harvey too hard, who is still adjusting to the professional league. With Tyler Badie and Jaleel McLaughlin<\/a> luckily there to back up Harvey, they’re not the experienced backs that the Broncos should rely on.<\/p>\n

The former three-time Pro Bowler has the size and physicality to run a 1-2 punch with Harvey. However, there are teams out there that could be looking into Elliott before the postseason since his last practice squad stint with the Los Angeles Chargers.<\/p>\n

1. Los Angeles Chargers<\/h3>\n

While Omarion Hampton, Najee Harris and Hassan Haskins are all on IR, the team is in dire need of a backup running back. The good news is that quarterback Justin Herbert has been able to hold his ground by throwing the football to Keenan Allen and Ladd McConkey, who’ve been able to move the chains and make life easier for current starting running back Kimani Vidal. Jim Harbaugh stressed the idea of a solid run game<\/a> for Herbert in the past, but never brought any help for it this year, despite the injuries.<\/p>\n

Elliott might be a one-stop shop free agent they may have to sign to give them a boost in redzone situations, at least.<\/p>\n

2. New England Patriots<\/h3>\n

Elliott has been here before as well. The New England Patriots are very familiar with the veteran, and since the team has new leadership, the free agent could excel even more than in his last stint in 2023. After serving as the backup for Rhamondre Stevenson, the veteran could help mentor rookie TreVeyon Henderson<\/a>. Nobody should leave out the idea of this possibility since they’re still in the market to fill the void for Antonio Gibson.<\/p>\n

3. Philadelphia Eagles<\/h3>\n

While the Eagles will win the NFC East at 7-2 and the Cowboys are trying to catch up, you never know if the team might stick it to Dallas and try to sign Elliott. The run game finally found some life, led by standout running back Saquon Barkley<\/a>. Unfortunately, it hasn’t paid off for Tank Bigsby, who was traded to the Eagles this season. Elliott could turn into a situational back and might be effective in the “tush push” moments that everyone in the league despises.<\/p>\n
