While Henderson had a dominant game with two long touchdowns, backup running back Terrell Jennings suffered a knee injury early in the contest and never returned to the game. With Rhamondre Stevenson still out with a toe injury, New England should do something to address the lack of depth at the position.

3 Running Backs the New England Patriots Could Sign

As of this posting, the only healthy backs on the team are Henderson and career journeyman D’Ernest Johnson. If Stevenson and Jennings can return to health, the 8-2 Patriots can get by with their current roster. However, if one or both players are down for the count, New England must find alternates. While the trade deadline is over, the Patriots still have a few interesting names to choose from on the open market.

Main Photo: Nathan Ray Seebeck – Imagn Images

1. Gus Edwards

Gus Edwards is probably the best of the free agent running backs and is an ideal fit for the Patriots if Terrell Jennings misses significant time. While Henderson finally showed signs of life in Week 10, he’s never going to be a downhill, physical runner. Henderson excels in space and beating defenders with his speed and agility, which makes him a threat in the open field. However, at 5′-10″ and 202 pounds, he’s not built to be a traditional short-yardage back.

This is where Gus Edwards comes in. During his time with the Ravens, the former undrafted free agent established himself as one of the league’s better battering rams. New England has used Jennings in a similar role this year, and Edwards is probably the closest fit available in free agency. While he had a rough year with the Chargers last year, New England doesn’t have too many other options at this point in the season.

Main Photo: Thomas Shea-Imagn Images

2. D’Onta Foreman

With the regular season over halfway done, the New England Patriots may turn to a familiar face to address their running back issue. D’Onta Foreman never played for the New England Patriots, but he did spend a few years with Mike Vrabel in Tennessee. After suffering injuries early in his career, the former third-round pick revived his career with a solid 2021 in place of an injured Derrick Henry.

2021 was a long time ago, but familiarity might be more important than talent at this stage of the season. Seeing as the Patriots don’t have a way to add a starting-caliber running back at this stage of the season, they might as well add someone the coaches trust, and Foreman is one of the better options from that standpoint.

Cleveland Browns running back D’Onta Foreman (27) celebrates his touchdown during the first half of an NFL preseason football game at Cleveland Browns Stadium, Saturday, Aug. 17, 2024, in Cleveland, Ohio.

3. Cordarrelle Patterson

Cordarrelle Patterson won a Super Bowl with the New England Patriots in 2018, and he could return to help the team get their playoff win since that magical season. While all of the players from the 2018 squad are gone, offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels remains. While he made the biggest headlines in Minnesota and Atlanta, McDaniels was the first coach to use the then-wide receiver as a running back. During his lone year with the Patriots, Patterson recorded 228 rushing yards and one touchdown on 42 attempts.

Now 34 years old, Patterson is not the dangerous open field weapon he used to be. However, he’s familiar with McDaniels’ complicated offense and could provide the veteran presence this team needs. Seeing as he shouldn’t cost more than the veteran minimum, it’s worth bringing him in and seeing if he has anything left in his tank.

Main Photo: Geoff Burke-Imagn Images

Two of the New England Patriots running backs are battling injuries, and rookie Tre’Veyon Henderson had a scare midway through Sunday’s win.

[6431,5
935,1548,4502,7394,33875,10069
post-254054","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-nfl-teams","category-patriots","tag-cordarrelle-patterson","tag-donta-foreman","tag-gus-edwards","tag-new-england-patriots-news","tag-terrell-jennings","tag-treveyon-henderson
["GET
