The Arizona Cardinals placed quarterback Kyler Murray on the injured reserve in a move that could unofficially signal the end of his tenure with the team. Selected with the first-overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft<\/a>, Murray had a decent start to the season but lost his job after suffering an injury and watching backup Jacoby Brissett match his production.<\/p>\n

5 Teams That Could Sign Kyler Murray After Cardinals Departure<\/h2>\n

Head coach Jonathan Gannon<\/a> said Brissett would remain the starter regardless of Murray’s health status, which means Kyler Murray has likely played his last game with the team. Murray is a top-32 quarterback in the NFL and deserves to start somewhere, but he’s not good enough to justify his $230.5 million contract. While nobody will give him that type of money, any one of the following teams could give him a shot on a cheap one-year deal.<\/p>\n

5. Las Vegas Raiders<\/h3>\n

Geno Smith had his best game of the season against the Jacksonville Jaguars, but his overall body of work with the Raiders has left a lot to be desired. After originally salvaging his career with Pete Carroll in Seattle<\/a>, the two reunited in Vegas with hopes of bringing this team to the postseason. That hasn’t happened, as the Raiders are 2-6 while Smith leads the league in interceptions (11).<\/p>\n

Smith’s contract means the team probably can’t get rid of him in 2026, but they can bring in some competition. Seeing as it’s projected to be a weak quarterback class, the Las Vegas Raiders could bring in Kyler Murray and have the two NFC West veterans battle for the starting job.<\/p>\n

4. Baltimore Ravens<\/h3>\n

Kyler Murray is not stealing Lamar Jackson’s starting job, but this could be a perfect pairing if the former first-overall pick has to settle for life as a backup quarterback. Jackson missed a decent chunk of the season with a hamstring injury, and former second-string quarterback Cooper Rush couldn’t do anything with the offense. While Tyler Huntley kept the team competitive when he became the backup, Baltimore could use an upgrade at the position.<\/p>\n

Kyler Murray would easily be the best backup in football, and his style of play is a perfect fit for this offense. We’ve seen highly-drafted quarterbacks like Mitchell Trubisky<\/a> spend a year or two as a backup before earning another starting opportunity, and Murray’s career could take a similar trajectory.<\/p>\n

3. New Orleans Saints<\/h3>\n

If the season ended today<\/a>, the New Orleans Saints would have the first-overall pick in the NFL Draft and would almost certainly use the selection on a quarterback. However, the Tennessee Titans have an identical 1-8 record, and six other teams only have two wins, so New Orleans might not be in a position to draft a quarterback when the season ends. If that happens, they should target a veteran like Kyler Murray.<\/p>\n

Spencer Rattler didn’t look like a superstar this year, but he was an adequate starter when on the field. Rookie Tyler Shough<\/a>, meanwhile, has only made one start this season, so it’s too early to say anything about his career. However, both players are incredibly inexperienced and could benefit from having a veteran like Murray on the roster. Signing Murray would increase the floor of the Saints quarterback room while also inviting a competitive three-way quarterback battle.<\/p>\n

2. New York Jets<\/h3>\n

The New York Jets are embracing the tank after being the biggest sellers at the trade deadline. This team is actively building for the future and will likely try to find their franchise quarterback in the 2026 NFL Draft. However, the success of Smith and Sam Darnold away from the Big Apple should show Woody Johnson the importance of having a veteran starter.<\/p>\n

Smith and Darnold both started right out of the gate and flamed out in New York. If the Jets want to avoid history repeating itself, they should sign Kyler Murray. Justin Fields is not getting the job done, and Woody Johnson’s comments<\/a> suggest he won’t return in 2026. Murray is a perfectly adequate bridge quarterback who won’t prevent a rookie from seeing the field if he’s great right away, but he also won’t struggle and force a rookie to play before he’s ready.<\/p>\n

1. Cleveland Browns<\/h3>\n

It might be time to add another name to that infamous jersey<\/a>. The Cleveland Browns entered the year with four notable quarterbacks on the roster, but they’re down to two after trading Kenny Pickett and Joe Flacco. Unfortunately, the two quarterbacks remaining haven’t shown much.<\/p>\n

Perhaps fifth-round pick Shedeur Sanders<\/a> can do something if and when he earns a chance to start, but rookie Dillon Gabriel<\/a> has been a disaster while under center. Put simply, he lacks the arm strength and athleticism to start in the NFL, and he won’t gain those skills any time soon. The Browns will probably draft a quarterback next year, but Kyler Murray would be the best quarterback on the roster since a healthy Baker Mayfield guided this team to the its first playoff win in an eternity.<\/p>\n
