The team opted not to rush him back last week — a cautious decision meant to prevent re-injury after he tore his hamstring in the first half of the season opener against the Seattle Seahawks.

That patience may prove wise, especially considering how the team handled quarterback Brock Purdy’s recovery. Purdy returned from a toe injury after missing two games, only to aggravate it against the Jacksonville Jaguars. He then missed his second straight game, leaving backup Mac Jones to start again against Atlanta.

49ers’ Struggles Without Purdy and Kittle

Despite Jones’ oblique and knee injuries, he has performed admirably in relief. However, last week’s loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers highlighted San Francisco’s offensive struggles without its top playmakers. Kittle and Ricky Pearsall were both out, and Jauan Jennings was clearly limited.

Even though Jones threw for 347 yards in the 49ers’ 30–19 loss, the offense never found balance. San Francisco managed only 54 rushing yards as turnovers and red-zone issues stalled drives.

That’s why Kittle’s presence is so critical. Beyond his playful, high-energy personality, Kittle remains one of the NFL’s most complete tight ends — an elite blocker and reliable target. Over his nine-year career, he has totaled 542 receptions, 7,405 yards, and 46 touchdowns, serving as a tone-setter and leader for the 49ers offense..

George Kittle Return 49ers: What was Expected vs. Falcons

With Pearsall still sidelined and Jennings reportedly frustrated about his role, Kittle’s availability steadied a unit that has struggled to find rhythm. Receivers Kendrick Bourne and Jake Tonges have contributed in expanded roles, but adding Kittle back into the mix — even on a limited snap count — gave San Francisco’s offense a much-needed jolt.

Kittle had an extremely quiet return, failing to catch either of the two passes Jones threw his way. However, he served as a decoy in the passing game and imposed his will up front on a night when running back Christian McCaffrey was clearly the best player on the field.

Kittle teamed with the offensive line to open holes for McCaffrey, who finished with 24 carries for 129 yards and two touchdowns, plus seven receptions for 72 yards. With Kittle on the field, 49ers running backs averaged 5.4 yards per carry compared to just 2.0 yards per carry when he was out of the game.

The fact that McCaffrey’s first 100-yard rushing performance of 2025 came in Kittle’s return shows just how important the tight end is to San Francisco’s offense. Now that he has a full game under his belt, look for Kittle’s usage to increase, especially if he can re-establish a rhythm in the passing game with Jones or Purdy.

If he can stay healthy moving forward, Kittle’s comeback could mark a turning point for a 49ers team trying to overcome injuries, regain its offensive identity, and continue winning football games.

Main Image: Darren Yamashita-Imagn Images

George Kittle’s return to the 49ers gave San Francisco a major boost in the win over the Atlanta Falcons in Week 7.

[31
1960
post-251488","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-49ers","tag-george-kittle
["GET
