The second-year safety, the team’s fourth-round pick in 2024, returned to practice Tuesday, the latest step in his recovery from the knee injury he suffered in last season’s finale.

Malik Mustapha’s Return Could Boost 49ers vs. Buccaneers

The 49ers have 21 days to decide whether to activate the Wake Forest alum from the physically unable to perform (PUP) list. If Mustapha feels good and gets cleared to make his 2025 debut this weekend, it would be a big boost for a secondary that has held its own so far this season.

Tampa Bay’s Explosive Offense

However, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ explosive offense presents a stiffer test. In this matchup between two NFC teams off to excellent 4–1 starts, the 49ers will need to limit quarterback Baker Mayfield and wide receivers Mike Evans and Emeka Egbuka from connecting on big plays. That’s where Mustapha’s presence could make an impact — especially if he can build on his rookie campaign when he recorded 72 tackles, one interception, and five passes defended in 16 games.

Mustapha Set to Lead Young Secondary

His return could also reduce some of the pressure on the 49ers’ younger defenders, providing much-needed experience and stability in the secondary. One of those rookie defenders, safety Marques Sigle, has played well through his first five NFL games. Sigle looks like Mustapha’s partner at safety moving forward. Third-round pick Upton Stout has manned the starting nickel corner spot. Up front, rookie defensive linemen Mykel Williams, Alfred Collins, and CJ West have shown glimpses of their potential as they continue to improve and adapt to the NFL.

The 49ers’ defense looks much different following multiple veteran departures in free agency this past offseason and Nick Bosa’s season-ending injury. Having received substantial playing time last year, Mustapha has the potential to elevate San Francisco’s secondary and help limit the points allowed by defensive coordinator Robert Saleh’s unit on Sunday.

Main Photo: Tina MacIntyre-Yee/Democrat and Chronicle-USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images

Second-year 49ers safety Malik Mustapha could return this weekend against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, boosting the team’s young defense.

[36,31
32540
post-249877","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-nfl-news","category-49ers","tag-malik-mustapha
["GET
