[Doug Engle/Florida Times-Union]

Surprising Defense Leading the Hunt

The unexpected star of Jacksonville’s season has been the defense. Through three weeks, the Jaguars have emerged as one of the league’s most disruptive units. Leading the NFL in interceptions and creating momentum-shifting turnovers that very few could have predicted. The secondary, long considered a liability, has flipped the script by baiting quarterbacks into mistakes.

Yet, while turnovers have fueled early success, the challenge will be at an apex this week. San Francisco regains the services of star quarterback Brock Purdy. Purdy returns from a toe injury that sidelined him for the past two weeks. His poise and efficiency have stabilized the 49ers’ offense since he first took over the starting job as a rookie. Add in emerging second-year wideout Ricky Pearsall. The talented receiver has already recorded 100-plus yards receiving in two of San Francisco’s first three games. Pearsall is showcasing why the 49ers invested a first-round pick in him in 2024, giving Purdy another dynamic option to sling the rock to.

#49ers QB Brock Purdy is back, as coach Kyle Shanahan announced that Purdy will return this Sunday. pic.twitter.com/rK2j18bODc

— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) September 26, 2025

Lawrence: Built on Hype, Not Production?

If the defense has been Jacksonville’s strength, the offense has been frustrating with inconsistency. Trevor Lawrence, once billed as a generational franchise quarterback, continues to look average at best. His inconsistency has continued with inaccurate passes, poor decision-making, and the infamous “hospital balls” that expose his receivers to punishing hits.

While his wideouts haven’t helped matters by dropping passes. Many of those drops were a result of Lawrence’s history of off-target throws that force them into vulnerable positions. It’s the same story that has followed him since his arrival in Jacksonville. The talent is supposed to be there, but the results rarely match the hype. For every clean strike Lawrence delivers, there seems to be another pass that sails high, behind, or puts a receiver in harm’s way. If the Jaguars want to continue to ascend in the AFC, the quarterback position cannot continue to be an anchor weighing them down.

Bright Spots: The Trenches and Travis Hunter

Not everything has been underwhelming on offense. One reason for optimism lies in the offensive line. After years of instability and poor play, the Jaguars’ front five look more cohesive than they have in recent memory. Pass protection has improved drastically. Meanwhile, the run blocking has shown some balance, allowing the offense a chance to find rhythm. This will be an area to watch closely during the Jaguars vs 49ers matchup.

Another key could be rookie two-way superstar Travis Hunter. Drafted for his generational versatility, Hunter has the ability to swing momentum. Unfortunately, he has yet to find a consistent offensive role. Hunter’s ability to stretch the field or make plays after the catch should give the Jaguars an explosive element to their passing game that has been missing for close to a decade. If Coen wants to get the offensive juices flowing, Hunter can’t continue to be a situational piece. It’s time to unleash his full potential.

The McCaffrey Factor

San Francisco, despite dealing with a multitude of injuries, still features the ultimate equalizer: Christian McCaffrey. Few players in the league create the matchup nightmare that McCaffrey can. His ability to line up in the backfield, slot, or out wide as both a runner and receiver is the kind of kryptonite that can dismantle even the league’s hottest defense. Jacksonville’s linebackers and safeties will need the game of their lives to keep him in check, and even then, “slowing him down” might be the most realistic expectation.

A Pivotal Week Out West

Liam Coen and company know this trip looms large. The Jaguars vs the 49ers matchup could be the turning point. Pulling off a win would push Jacksonville to 3-1 for the first time since 2018 and belief that this team may be something more than a September mirage. However, a loss could reinforce the notion that the Jaguars are the same old Jags of the past.

With a hungry 49ers team starting to get healthy, the Jaguars’ overhyped quarterback will be under the microscope to deliver. If Trevor Lawrence doesn’t step up this week, Jacksonville’s promising start will quickly fade into the familiar fool’s gold of seasons past.

Main Image: Corey Perrine/Florida Times-Union / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images

The Jacksonville Jaguars head west this Sunday to take on the San Francisco 49ers.
