While you won’t find anyone capable of matching his production on the waiver wire, there are a few starting-caliber options that may be available in your league. In no particular order, you should see if any of these three players are available.

Main Photo: Bob DeChiara-Imagn Images

Aug 13, 2023; New Orleans, Louisiana, USA; New Orleans Saints wide receiver A.T. Juwan Johnson

Volume is king in fantasy football, and Juwan Johnson could be this year’s breakout at the tight end position. The veteran tight end and former wide receiver was one of the brightest stars for the New Orleans Saints in Week 1, finishing the contest with eight receptions for 76 yards on 11 targets while playing in 99% of the snaps.

Johnson has never sustained this level of play in his career, so perhaps this was just a flash-in-the-pan type of performance. However, he’s definitely worth the shot. Kellen Moore seems like he built his offense around the tight end position, and Johnson clearly has chemistry with starting quarterback Spencer Rattler. Harold Fannin Jr

Rookie tight ends rarely make an impact in fantasy football, but Harold Fannin could be the exception to the rule. The third-round pick had an encouraging debut against the Cleveland Browns, recording seven receptions for 63 yards on nine targets while playing in 72% of the snaps. He did this despite sharing the field with a more proven tight end in David Njoku, which suggests the future is bright for the Bowling Green product.

Once again, it’s only one week, so perhaps he won’t match this pace for the remainder of the season. The Notre Dame product was an early second-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, and while he never quite lived up to that promise, he played well in his first game under head coach Pete Carroll.

Playing in 63% of the snaps, Mayer hauled in all four of his targets for 38 yards.
