However, they may be at a significant reckoning point.<\/p>\n<p>Entering his ninth NFL season, and the eighth as the Chiefs\u2019 starting quarterback, Mahomes, the No. 10 overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, is as accomplished as any player before him when counting his individual and team accolades.<\/p>\n<h2>Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes Key Factor in Ominous Trend<\/h2>\n<h3>Chiefs Defense Covering For Patrick Mahomes, Offense<\/h3>\n<p>As his 30th birthday nears, things have changed drastically around Mahomes since Year 1 with the Chiefs. The Athletic\u2019s Jeff Howe noted the \u201csurreal\u201d way conversations around the Chiefs have \u201cchanged,\u201d particularly over the past two seasons.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn a discussion of their roster makeup with rival executives, the conversation quickly pivots to their defensive identity,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/6582010\/2025\/08\/29\/nfl-teams-rumors-drake-maye-rome-odunze\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Howe wrote<\/a> on August 29. \u201cNo one is diminishing Patrick Mahomes\u2019 body of work, but the ongoing turnover in offensive personnel has taken a toll on his statistical production. Over the 2024 and 2025 seasons, Mahomes averaged a 4,055.5-26.5-12.5 line on 67.3% completion.<\/p>\n<p>Both his air yards per attempt and yards per completion each fell roughly 2 yards in that span.<\/p>\n<p>That is as much a function of the turnover at the Chiefs\u2019 skill positions and along the offensive line as it is an indictment of Mahomes. He admitted to shifting to a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/2024\/02\/08\/chiefs-mahomes-game-manager-49ers-purdy-newton\/\" target=\"_self\">game manager<\/a>\u201d in 2024.<\/p>\n<h3>Chiefs Outmaneuvered Sting of Patrick Mahomes\u2019 Contract<\/h3>\n<p>Mahomes is on a 1<a href=\"https:\/\/www.spotrac.com\/nfl\/player\/_\/id\/21751\/patrick-mahomes\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">0-year, $450 million contract<\/a>, and the exorbitant nature of the deal has impacted the Chiefs\u2019 ability to build out the rest of the roster. They could be back to their explosive ways this coming season, but the trend is not just a matter of concern in Kansas City.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, there is an argument to be made that Mahomes is now relatively underpaid, as Howe previously explained.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Chiefs have set the standard as a modern-day dynasty, but they\u2019re not dealing with the QB contract boom in the same way. Not anymore at least. Mahomes\u2019 deal has since become outdated, ranking 15th in average annual value. He\u2019s behind <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/2024\/09\/11\/deshaun-watson-cleveland-browns-contract\/\" target=\"_self\">[Deshaun] Watson<\/a>, who won\u2019t play this season with a twice-torn Achilles, and tied with <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/2025\/04\/25\/what-kirk-cousins-workout-attendance-means-for-falcons-future\/\" target=\"_self\">Kirk Cousins<\/a>, who is the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/category\/nfl-teams\/falcons\/\" target=\"_self\">Atlanta Falcons<\/a>\u2019 backup,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/6576049\/2025\/08\/28\/nfl-qb-contracts-mahomes-allen-prescott-burrow\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Howe wrote<\/a> on August 28.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Chiefs had to make sacrifices \u2014 none bigger than trading superstar wide receiver <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/2025\/04\/12\/tyreek-hill-trade-rumors-2\/\" target=\"_self\">Tyreek Hill<\/a> in the middle of his prime. FILE PHOTO; Mandatory Credit: USA TODAY Sports<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Howe\u2019s most recent piece pointed to Chiefs defensive coordinator <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/2025\/08\/28\/chris-jones-confident-chiefs-defense-will-deliver-again\/\" target=\"_self\">Steve Spagnuolo<\/a> being \u201cregarded among the best\u201d at what he does. All-Pro defensive lineman <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/2025\/03\/09\/chris-jones-sends-2-word-message-after-chiefs-make-45-million-decision\/\" target=\"_self\">Chris Jones<\/a> is an \u201cinterior enforcer\u201d and \u201con a Hall of Fame trajectory.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Both help the Chiefs ease Mahomes\u2019 burden.<\/p>\n<p>In that sense, it is the opposite trajectory of NFL legend <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/2025\/02\/26\/nfl-announces-matthew-stafford-update-tom-brady-raiders\/\" target=\"_self\">Tom Brady<\/a>. Specifically, it is similar to Brady\u2019s run early in his <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/category\/nfl-teams\/patriots\/\" target=\"_self\">New England Patriots<\/a> tenure.<\/p>\n<p>Brady, whom Mahomes is compared to in the debate for the G.O.A.T. QB, began his ascension as the beneficiary of a great defense and timely playmaking. Mahomes also still moves around the pocket well and even breaks free when needed.<\/p>\n<p>But Mahomes is playing a brand of ball that seems commensurate with the Chiefs\u2019 roster build. He can also still take advantage of his opportunities. Mahomes has weapons like <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/2025\/07\/17\/chiefs-rice-jail-probation-crash-mahomes-worthy\/\" target=\"_self\">Rashee Rice<\/a> (when he returns from a six-game suspension) and <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/2024\/07\/17\/chiefs-worthy-reacts-mahomes-message-training-camp\/\" target=\"_self\">Xavier Worthy<\/a> at his disposal. <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/2025\/08\/29\/travis-kelce-takes-stand-for-shedeur-sanders-post-engagement\/\" target=\"_self\">Travis Kelce<\/a> is still around, too.<\/p>\n<p>Mahomes and the Chiefs are no longer viewed as a juggernaut, even after winning 15 games.<\/p>\n<p>That, and the potential narrative that their offense will not recover from the Super Bowl debacle, could set Mahomes and the Chiefs up for a veritable bounce-back season.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Kansas City Chiefs are by no means reaching the end of the road with Patrick Mahomes.
