Mahomes, who is on a <a href=\"https:\/\/overthecap.com\/player\/patrick-mahomes\/5594\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">10-year, $450 million contract extension<\/a>, will not receive any of that money, but he will see it in action.<\/p>\n<h2>Patrick Mahomes Reacts to Chiefs\u2019 Historic $94 Million Decision<\/h2>\n<h3>Chiefs Keep Key Piece In Front of Patrick Mahomes<\/h3>\n<p>The Chiefs signed former sixth-round pick Trey Smith, the No. 226 overall selection of the 2021 draft, to a <a href=\"https:\/\/overthecap.com\/player\/trey-smith\/9690\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">four-year, $94 million contract<\/a> before training camp.<\/p>\n<p>That decision has significant implications for Mahomes, who shared a wide-grin emoji afterward.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"art\" dir=\"ltr\">\ud83d\ude01<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Patrick Mahomes II (@PatrickMahomes) <a  href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PatrickMahomes\/status\/1945181267021963424?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">July 15, 2025<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>\u201cPro-Bowl guard Trey Smith and the Chiefs reached agreement just ahead of today\u2019s franchise-tag deadline on a four-year, $94 million deal that includes $70 million guaranteed and makes him the highest-paid guard in NFL history, ESPN\u2019s sources tell me and @ByNateTaylor,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/AdamSchefter\/status\/1945178397816111176?s=19\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ESPN\u2019s Adam Schefter reported<\/a> on X on July 15, shortly after word a deal was close circulated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s the highest-average annual salary and the most guaranteed money ever awarded to an NFL guard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Smith was diagnosed with blood clots in his lungs coming out of college. That contributed to his slide in the draft. He has missed one game since entering the league, which was in 2022. He joins center Creed Humphrey, who signed a <a href=\"https:\/\/overthecap.com\/player\/creed-humphrey\/9527\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">four-year, $76 million extension<\/a> in August 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Humphrey (No. 1) and Smith (No. 4) landed on ESPN\u2019s list of the top-10 IOL entering 2025.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPower, brute strength, physicality &#8212; he\u2019s a people-mover and a people-stopper,\u201d an anonymous AFC executive said, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nfl\/story\/_\/id\/45530903\/top-10-nfl-interior-offensive-linemen-execs-scouts-2025-espn-jeremy-fowler-position-rankings\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">per ESPN\u2019s Jeremy Fowler<\/a> on July 12.<\/p>\n<p>An anonymous coordinator offered a bit more polarized take on Humphrey, saying the former No. 63 pick is \u201cgreat in pass protection\u201d with matching feet and instincts, but also that opponents can \u201ckick his a** a little bit\u201d if he gets left on an island.<\/p>\n<p>Surely to Mahomes and the Chiefs\u2019 delight, Humphrey <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nfl\/insider\/story\/_\/id\/40284084\/top-10-nfl-interior-offensive-linemen-execs-scouts-2024-espn-jeremy-fowler-position-rankings\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">rose from seventh and Smith ninth<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>They also both ranked ahead of former Chiefs guard <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/2025\/05\/20\/chicago-bears-joe-thuney-agree-to-contract-extension\/\" target=\"_self\">Joe Thuney<\/a>. The Chiefs traded\u00a0 Thuney to the Chicago Bears this offseason. He ranked sixth on the 2025 list.<\/p>\n<h3>Patrick Mahomes Tops Top-10 List<\/h3>\n<p>The Chiefs will enter the 2025 season with the No. 1 QB according to ESPN\u2019s polling, which took into account input from a collection of 70 coaches, front office members, and scouts to come up with the list.<\/p>\n<p>Mahomes captured the No. 1 slot for the third straight season and the fifth time in its six-year existence. His only \u201cmiss\u201d was ranking second in 2022.<\/p>\n<p>Fowler argued that his grip on the top spot was \u201cloosening slightly\u201d this season.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOL in decline, particularly at tackle, WR group completely cleaned out by injury, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/2025\/02\/25\/chiefs-jones-message-kelce-retirement-gray\/\" target=\"_self\">[Travis] Kelce<\/a> not near the same player,\u201d an anonymous coordinator said, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nfl\/story\/_\/id\/45530940\/top-10-nfl-quarterbacks-execs-scouts-2025-espn-jeremy-fowler-position-rankings\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">according to Fowler<\/a> on July 14. \u201cI thought he had more command of time\/score\/situation and better fundamentals from within the pocket than ever. He\u2019s a one-man army. And no NFL coach wants to deal with him. Complete dawg. No one like him. Maybe <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/2025\/06\/18\/revamped-offensive-line-is-poised-to-protect-joe-burrow\/\" target=\"_self\">[Joe] Burrow<\/a>, but Burrow isn\u2019t as dangerous as a player.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>An anonymous NFC exec said others performed well enough to rank ahead of Mahomes on his list, noting the QB\u2019s \u201clittle step back\u201d in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>That executive also expects Mahomes to return to form, which is great news for the Chiefs.<\/p>\n<p><em>Main Photo: Mark J.
