As always, it delivered drama, surprises, and some bold decisions. With several trades shaking up the top ten and a few notable prospects sliding down the board, let’s break down the biggest winners and losers from opening night in Green Bay.

Biggest Winners and Losers From Round 1 of the NFL Draft

Winners

Cam Ward/Titans

Once a zero-star high school prospect, Miami quarterback Cam Ward was drafted No. 1 overall by the Tennessee Titans to be their franchise quarterback. This is a win-win for the Titans and Ward, who are both looking ahead to better days.

Jacksonville Jaguars
The Jaguars pulled off the most eye-catching move of the night by trading up to No. 2 overall to select Colorado’s Travis Hunter. Known for his rare ability to play both wide receiver and cornerback at an elite level, Hunter is one of the most versatile prospects in recent memory. Jacksonville clearly sees him as a game-changer. Hunter will play receiver with some snaps at cornerback for the Jaguars.

New York Giants
The Giants came away from Round 1 with two key additions. First, they stayed at No. 3 and selected Penn State edge rusher Abdul Carter, giving their defense a dynamic pass rusher to anchor the front seven. Later in the night, they jumped back into the first round and took quarterback Jaxson Dart out of Ole Miss. Dart provides a potential long-term solution at QB, who brought in Jameis Winston and Russell Wilson in free agency as potential short-term answers. The Giants were big winners in the first round of the NFL Draft.

Losers

Shedeur Sanders
Perhaps the biggest shock of the night was that Shedeur Sanders, the highly touted quarterback from Colorado, wasn’t selected in the first round. Once considered a possible top 5 pick, his slide raises questions about how teams viewed his fit and readiness for the NFL. Sanders will still likely hear his name called early on Day 2, but for now, he sits among the biggest surprises of the draft.

Chicago Bears

The Chicago Bears finally have their franchise quarterback in Caleb Williams. Going into the draft, it looked like the Bears were going to select someone on the offensive side of the ball. They did just that last night. However, the team opted to select tight end Colston Loveland at number ten overall. This is a bit of a letdown for Chicago, considering that Penn State tight end Tyler Warren was still on the board. Although Loveland is touted as a better blocker, Warren was undoubtedly a better pass-catching threat. Chicago was also interested in drafting Ashton Jeanty, but he was picked at number six by the Las Vegas Raiders.

Los Angeles Rams
The Los Angeles Rams exited the night without a first-round selection after dealing their pick earlier in the offseason. In a year where several teams got better quickly, sitting out Round 1 could prove costly for a roster that needs fresh talent across the board. The Rams are quite a few pieces away from contending for another Super Bowl, and with not having a first-round pick this year, that remains the case.

Main Photo: Dan Powers / USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin-USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images

The first round of the 2025 NFL Draft is officially in the books.
