He was an unranked high school recruit and committed to Southeastern Louisiana where he played in six games and made four starts in his first season. He became a full-time starter in 2021 and earned First Team All-Southland Conference honors helping Southeastern Louisiana reach the second round of the FCS playoffs. In 2022 Alexander once again helped Southeastern Louisiana reach the second round of the FCS playoffs while earning First Team All-Southland Conference honors. Alexander transferred to LSU in 2023 where he became an immediate full-time starter, before suffering a season-ending injury in the middle of the season. In his last season with the Tigers, he started 10 games and led the team in interceptions.

Strengths:

Alexander is one of the best run defense cornerbacks in this year’s draft class. He is physical in the run game and a very willing tackler. Alexander is a strong and consistent tackler who wraps up well and limits missed tackles. In coverage, he is a physical press corner with good length. He has solid technique and good awareness. He anticipates routes well, is able to consistently reroute receivers, and plays the game with good patience and confidence.

Alexander rarely panics in coverage, and despite being a physical cornerback he does a good job of not being too grabby in coverage, and avoiding penalties. He has decent ball skills and brought in 13 interceptions during his college career. He tracks the ball well and has good instincts in zone coverage.

Weaknesses:

Alexander is not a great athlete at cornerback. He is not an overly explosive or fluid athlete and has below average long speed. He shows some tightness in the hips and modest change of direction skills that limit his ceiling in man coverage. In press coverage, he has inconsistent hand placement and quicker receivers can give him some trouble.

Alexander is a strong and physical run defender, but he can struggle to shed blocks at times and has average play strength. He has suffered a few injuries throughout his career including a torn ACL in 2023 and a broken collarbone in high school.

Potential Team Fits:

Carolina Panthers

Dallas Cowboys

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

NFL Projection:

Alexander is a smart, experienced, and technically sound cornerback who has good length, ball skills, and instincts in zone coverage. However, he has some athletic limitations that could hold him back at the next level. He is not an explosive athlete and has modest long speed and change of direction ability. In a zone-heavy scheme, Alexander could develop into a solid NFL player. With his skill set and previous experience at the position, it could possibly be a good idea to try him at safety in the NFL as well. Despite a lack of athletic upside his consistency in coverage and run support ability can add good value to an NFL team.

Prospect Grade:

Late Fourth Round

Main Image: Stephen Lew-Imagn Images

Zy Alexander scouting report.
