He has put up consistent numbers in each of the last four seasons. Batty plays with a high motor and a level of physicality that will be intriguing to NFL coaches. Batty is a strong defensive end whose scouting report suggests that he could carve out a role at the next level.

More 2025 NFL Draft Scouting Profiles

Overview, Film Analysis, and 2025 Scouting Report of BYU EDGE Tyler Batty

Measurables

Height: 6’6”

Weight: 271 lbs

Player Background

Batty is well-loved among BYU fans. He grew up in Payson, Utah, just about 20 minutes from BYU’s campus. At Payson High School, Batty earned First-Team All-Region honors. He was rated as a three-star recruit by 247Sports. Batty received offers from Utah, Utah State, and Air Force, but he chose to stay home and play for the BYU Cougars. He served a mission in Spain from 2017-2019, then he returned to BYU to begin his collegiate career.

In his five seasons as a Cougar, Batty totaled over 200 tackles and 16.5 sacks. He earned limited playing time in 2020 before securing a starting role in 2021. Since then, he has been consistently productive, with at least 43 tackles in each season. He was named to the All-Big 12 Second Team in 2023 and the All-Big 12 First Team in 2024. Batty will be 25 years old when the NFL season starts, making him one of the older prospects in this year’s draft.

Strengths

At a menacing 6’6” and 271 pounds, Batty has the strength to push the pocket and affect opposing quarterbacks. He plays with a high motor, even on runs away from his side. Batty shows a variety of moves when rushing the passer. He has a good bull rush and can catch tackles off guard with his power. He also showcases an effective swim move.

Batty is able to set the edge against the run with some consistency. He is a fairly consistent tackler. BYU used him at multiple spots along the defensive line, though he primarily played on the edge. He even has some experience dropping into coverage.

Weaknesses

Batty is not an elite athlete. His 10-foot broad jump and 34-inch vertical jump at the NFL Combine show limited explosiveness. The numbers match the tape, as Batty is often slow to get off the ball. He has a below-average wingspan, which can result in difficulty getting off blocks. Batty lacks the flexibility to bend around the edge of the offensive line. He does not have a go-to pass rush move that he can consistently win with.

Potential Team Fits

Cincinnati Bengals

Kansas City Chiefs

New Orleans Saints

NFL Projection

Batty is an aggressive defender with impressive strength and solid production. His lack of athletic traits will push him down draft boards, especially in a loaded defensive line class. Batty will likely serve as a depth piece at the next level. He will need to refine his pass rush moves to build a long career in the NFL. Batty projects as a sixth-round talent. The 2025 NFL Draft begins on April 24.

Main Photo: Mark J.
